Nintendo held a special 40 minute plus September Nintendo Direct announcing brand new games and add-ons for existing ones. There was plenty to see, from brand new information on Pokemon Sword & Shield, to surprise announcements of games like Deadly Premonition 2. The biggest news of the night, though, involved the new characters coming to everyone’s favorite crossover party fighting fame Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The Smash Bros. Ultimate news section began with info about the Fall update for the game. The big news is the launch of the third DLC fighter from the Fighter Pass expansion pack. That fighter, Banjo & Kazooie from the hit N64 3D platformer Banjo-Kazooie, are downloadable and playable now! Their drop was a big surprise, and they were officially released at the end of the Nintendo Direct presentation.
Following that, Nintendo shared some info on who would be coming to the game as a playable fighter next. They played a special trailer showing off various SNK fighting game characters failing to grab a floating invitation to the Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, before one hand finally grabs it. That hand belonged to none other than the blonde buster wolf himself, Terry Bogard. Arguably the most iconic SNK character, Terry Bogard debuted in their fighting game series Fatal Fury, later making his presence known in other SNK fighting games like Garou: Mark of the Wolves and the iconic King of Fighters franchise.
Terry is currently in development as the next Fighter Pass character, and is set to release sometime in November of this year. There’s only one more unrevealed character left in the Fighter Pass for Smash Bros. Ultimate, but Nintendo assured us that the battle is far from over. During the Nintendo Direct, they also confirmed that additional DLC fighters are planned, after the current Fighter Pass.
After the Nintendo Direct, there was a special Smash Bros. Ultimate presentation focused on showing off the move set of new character Banjo & Kazooie. That stream, too, had its own bombshell reveals to share with the audience. Namely, the wild surprise inclusion of Sans from Undertale in the game. Unfortunately, for fans hoping he’d be a full fighter, Sans is only a DLC costume for the Mii Fighter characters. He’s available now, and includes a special new remix of the song Megalovania that was composed by Undertale creator Toby Fox.
Smash Bros. Ultimate, Banjo & Kazooie, and the Sans Mii Fighter costume are all available now on Nintendo Switch.
