One of the most enjoyable anime series of the current season has been Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!, aka The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! It’s basically the most perfect anime ever, checking all the boxes, including:
- A sexy and stylish dark-skinned demon lord who becomes a tiny girl, because of irony
- A hilarious and relatable story because Jahy-sama is so impoverished and unlucky
- An actually interesting premise (Jahy is on a quest to accumulate mana crystals so she can re-create her world)
- Great voice performances all around
- Plus random fun with sacks of fat:
The Story of Jahy-sama
Jahy-sama is the second most powerful ruler in the Demon Realm, enjoying a life of comfort as she dishes out cruelty to her terrified subjects. When a magical girl destroys the mana crystal that’s the source of her power, her world is destroyed, and Jahy-sama is sent to Earth where she lives her life as a tiny girl because she’s lost most of her power. She only has enough mana left to transform into her adult self for eight hours a day while she works her shift at an izakaya bar to get money to live.
If it feels like we’ve met Jahy-sama before, it’s because she’s voiced by Naomi Ozora, who has distinguished herself with such characters as Satania from Gabriel Dropout and Hana from Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out. She’s perfect for the role, both in her evil adult form as well as when she’s a down-on-her-luck loli trying to get out of paying rent. The show can be summed up as Satania is a Part-Timer!
Why Doesn’t Twitter Hate Jahy-Sama?
Out of all the various flavors of social media out there, I find the one I enjoy the most is Twitter, because it’s a fun place where people who enjoy sharing memes or sexy anime GIFs have self-selected themselves into groups of cool people with similar tastes. I especially love the way I can post short animation clips related to what I’m blogging about, and even sexy NSFW content without the dreary self-censorship I have to subject myself to on Facebook or Instagram.
Yet sometimes when anonymous groups come together in online communities strange things can happen, like when a subset of users influences each other into going on a “holy war” against a certain anime. This is what happened with Uzaki-chan, because there’s no way a university student could be, you know, short with big boobs. While some of the “outrage” was being fanned and magnified by YouTubers wanting to get more views for their videos, it was interesting seeing the mental gymnastics the anti-Uzaki gang unleashed on anime fans to shame us for watching what is actually a very wholesome show.
And yet, Jahy-sama seems to be completely free of this online angst, despite the fact that she’s a dark-skinned demon woman who transforms into an actual loli every episode. Maybe the age of random groups on social media attacking segments of fandom for no reason is behind us.
