One new anime series I’m totally enjoying is My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv. 999, aka Loving Yamada at Lv999. It’s a cute and engaging story of a goofy, clumsy girl trying to get over a breakup, and the brooding boy she knows through an online game. Let’s see if it should be on your radar this anime season!

Why Should You Be Watching Loving Yamada at Lv999?
My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv. 999 is an anime series based on a shoujo manga written by Mashiro. The main character is Akane Kinoshita, a university student who got dumped by her boyfriend Takuma after he cheated on her with a girl he met in an online game. Akane is heartbroken and takes her frustration out on Yamada, a player she knows in the Forest of Savior game who’s usually socially cold to others. But what happens when she meets Yamada in person and finds that he’s an incredibly handsome professional gamer?
Why is this show worth watching? Here are five reasons!
It’s a Shoujo Story Based on a Beloved Manga
You know of my belief that stories from battle-tested manga artists are usually going to be better than ones based on light novels, which can lack a structured approach to storytelling. I can’t wait to see how the relationship of Akane and Yamada unfolds.
Akane is Ridiculously Cute
Whether she’s pouting over her breakup or dressing up to try to make her ex-boyfriend jealous and then falling on her ass in front of him, the antics Akane puts on for us are super fun.
Yamada is a Great Guy
Although he lacks social skills, Yamada is a chill dude and a super gentleman. In episode 1, Akane goes to the bathroom and comes back to find Yamada has disappeared from the restaurant they were at. She assumes he ditched her, because he’s uninterested in girls and dating, but he had dashed to a nearby convenience store to buy band-aids for her injured feet. He makes me want to be a better man, myself.
Loving Yamada at Lv999 is a Grown-Up Story
For once, we can look forward to a compelling story about something other than students half our age one-third our age trying to get a fourth member so their school club won’t be closed. With Akane being in university, we know we’ll get a more grown-up story in which the relationship actually gets physical, rather than just being the usual platonic fluff.
Akane’s Friend Momoko is Great
The side characters are super important in a good rom-com, and I found Akane’s friend Momoko to always be entertaining as a foil for Akane’s silliness.
Loving Yamada at Lv999 has Great Voice Performances and Animation
My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv. 999 is animated by Madhouse, who has brought us many quality anime series over the years. And the voice performances by Inori Minase (Rem, Hestia) and Kouki Uchiyama (Izumi from Horimiya, Kei Tsukishima from Haikyuu!) make the show even better.
