We know that anime stories are built on familiar tropes. One of the most popular involves a generic main character who travels to an isekai fantasy world. There, he becomes a hero, winning the love of a princess. This is the premise behind Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari (aka Tales of Wedding Rings). Only instead of one princess, the hero is destined to end up with five of them. Is this show just another isekai trash harem, or is it worth your time? Let’s find out together!

Is Kekkon Yubiwa Monotatari Just Another Trash Isekai?
One day young Satou was hunting for beetles when he suddenly saw a bright light. A beautiful girl named Hime stepped out from the light and asked him to keep what he had seen a secret. Years later, he’s in high school, and Hime is living next door to him. She comes over every morning to wake him up and make him breakfast like the perfect childhood friend should. Satou wants to confess his feelings to Hime, but when he tries to do so, she hits him with some bad news: she’s moving away and has become engaged to get married to someone else.
What else is there for Satou to do but chase after her? He goes through the doorway into her world to find Hime about to marry another man. Just then a demon attacks, and Hime makes up her mind to choose Satou as her husband. She gives him the Ring of Light that she bears, granting him magic powers so he can defeat the creature. He thus becomes the Lord of the Ring Ring King, and he must seek out four more princesses to marry if he is to defeat the demons once and for all.
Male Wish Fulfillment Fantasy?
On the one hand, this is yet another anime about a Japanese everyman — he’s even named Satou, the most common family name in Japan — who becomes a hero in another world and gets a harem in the process. While there are both good and bad isekai series out there, many fans criticize the industry’s over-reliance on this genre. Shouldn’t we get angry at being manipulated with yet another wish-fulfillment escapist fantasy story for men?
On the other hand, if the story, characters and animation are all well done, who cares? Isesaki and harem stories are popular for a reason. They give fans a comfortable way to escape the stresses of the real world for an hour or two. Another similar example is Isesaki de Cheat Skill, an “isekai trash” anime that was as predictable as it was enjoyable.
This “isekai marriage love comedy” anime is based on a popular manga by artist Meibii that has run in Monthly Big Gangan since 2014. The name is riffing on the Japanese title of Lord of the Rings, although there are no specific parody elements from that series.
The animation is being done by relatively new studio Staple Entertainment, who brought us Vermeil in Gold. The voice cast is solid, headed by Akari Kitou as the main heroine, Hime. She voices such fan favorites as Nezuko from Demon Slayer, Tsukasa from Tonikawa, and Kaho from Blend S.
A Sexy Harem Anime
Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari is similar to Isekai Meikyu de Harem wo in that we know right from the start that the main character is going to end up with a harem of five girls eventually. This is an interesting way to let viewers know up front what kind of story to expect. However, it also reduces the potential for drama, since we know that our hero can’t be killed in the current battle because he still has girls to acquire. But let’s be honest: fans are here for the waifus, not the combat scenes.
One concern I have is how the pacing will go. If all five princesses are going to be shoehorned into a single anime season, it seems like things will be too rushed for fans to enjoy the story. But if they go too slowly and the show isn’t renewed for additional seasons, fans will feel just as frustrated. In addition to human Hime and elf Nefritis, the other wives are Amber, owner of the Earth Ring, catgirl princess Granart, and water dragon princess Saphir.
In keeping with the recent trend in super fan service-y anime, it’s quite a sexy show. There are many steamy situations and nudity that provide entertainment and help us feel connected to the characters. This is one of the horniest anime seasons I can remember, so this new offering fits right in. And it’s not censored like the broadcast version of Ayakashi Triangle, either, so it deserves our support!

Ecchi Anime Brings the World Together!
I love browsing through memes relating to a new anime to get a sense of what kind of fans it’s attracting. And all too often, they end up with reactions from fans in Spanish, French, Thai, or even Arabic. I always smile at this, knowing that our shared popular culture, including ecchi anime, is bringing the world together every day.
