The reason we enjoy anime is the relationships between the characters, and one popular trope is for creators to put cousins into their stories to make the characters more complete. But wait! Why do anime cousins sometimes hook up romantically? Isn’t that incest or something? A lot of people react to the idea of cousins getting married but, in reality, it’s more common than you might think. First-cousin marriage is legal in more than half of U.S. states, and it’s downright common in some parts of the world, with countries in Northern Africa and the Middle East recording up to 50% of marriages being between cousins.
Lots of famous people have married their cousins, too, like Charles Darwin, Edgar Allan Poe, FDR and Queen Elizabeth II. Albert Einstein divorced his wife so he could marry the woman he really loved, his cousin Elsa.

One of the most popular anime cousins is Suguha from Sword Art Online. She’s voiced by serial incestuous sister seiyu Ayana Taketatsu, naturally.
Then there are the original “cousins with benefits,” Haruka and Michiru from Sailor Moon. They were a canon lesbian couple in the original show but got changed to cousins in the U.S. dub. It’s funny that America wasn’t ready for lesbians, but cousins who are obviously in love weren’t a problem, culturally.
Then we have…another Michiru, this time from Saekano. The sexy cousin of Tomoya is purely there to offer eye candy to us fans.
Another romantic situation with anime cousins! Carol from Tomo-chan is a Girl! is dating her (distant) cousin, Kousuke.
Kazuma and Ayano from Kaze no Stigma are another example of anime cousins developing a thing for each other. How often do you lick your cousins?
Jessica “Sexy” Morishima, half-British cousin to Haruka from Amagami SS. The scene where she kissed Junichi “because in the West it’s just a greeting” was hilarious.

Another awesome anime cousin is Erio Towa from Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko, which has the best English title ever: Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl. Erio’s initials are E.T. because she’s an alien…or is she? In addition to having the best anime OP ever, it gave us a lot of sexy fan service.
We all loved watching Chisato from Shinmai Maou no Testament try to get into Basara’s pants. She’s his cousin (once removed, meaning her mother and Basara were first cousins).
Another example of being first cousins not getting in the way of having a good time is Yuka and Kouta from Elfin Lied.
Keitarou’s “Aunt” Haruka from Love Hina is actually his older cousin. She’s pretty hot.
Another pair of anime cousins who are pretty easy on the eyes are the “Nakiri sisters” (actually cousins), Erena and Alice. They were especially nice to look at during swimsuit episodes.
