The Internet is an amazing place, where we can join communities and find like-minded people to chat with about any topic we could think of. But sometimes when we share views about anime that goes against the mainstream opinions that most fans share, we can end up making a lot of people angry. I asked J-List customers to share their unpopular anime opinion, and we got a lot of responses. Keep reading to see them!
Why do we hate or love certain shows, or characters, or genres in anime? Why do some people love spicy food while others hate it? As I explored in my post on “problematic anime,” I think it’s a matter of the layers of the positive or negative experience you had with that thing, which shapes the current opinion you hold. Also, we identify with groups more than we’re aware of, but when those groups change — say, when all the “normies” decide they love Sword Art Online, and we don’t want to be associated with that kind of lower-tier fan — it can make us re-think our preferences.
What is your Unpopular Anime Opinion? J-List Customers Tell Us!
Dragon Ball and One Piece are both boring and derivative. Shounen Anime is too mainstream.
Some dubs are better than subs. There do with me as you will.
“Fan service” is often more annoying than enjoyable, and usually detracts from the story. We get it, you want that horny audience on board.
My unpopular anime opinion is that Toradora! sucks and is the worst RomCom slice of life in existence!!!
MHA, FMA and Jojo are all overrated.
Curious to read how I stopped worrying and learned to love Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure? Blog post here!
Bleach showing on Disney+ is good for the anime industry and for Western audiences.
Ecchi is the best genre. That’s my unpopular anime opinion.
I didn’t really like Kaguya-sama: Love is War.
My unpopular anime opinion is that lolis are not real children that don’t need protection.
Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and Nausicaa Valley of the Wind are the only good Ghibli films. The others are mid at best.
Euphoria is the best visual novel.
Harem and ecchi are perfectly good genres.
I liked Eromanga Sensei.
School Days is actually good.
His yogurt really did taste funny.
People chasing waifus every season is also treasonous behavior and should come with the death penalty.
That even “bad” anime series serve a purpose in the anime community.
