Hello from Japan and J-List. It’s a relatively warm day today, as we get the update out a few hours earlier than usual.
J-List had technical difficulties during parts of Tuesday and Wednesday, which caused temporary problem viewing the J-List site. Also, some orders that were processed by the shopping cart weren’t actually processed. If anyone made an order or left email via the secure email link and didn’t get a reply from us, please contact us immediately.
Today is a holiday in Japan, National Foundation day, the date of the enthroning of Japan’s first emperor according to legend and adopted by the creators of Japan’s first constitution in 1880’s. The holiday was made illegal by MacArthur after World War II as part of the outlawed “Emperor System, but was reinstated some years ago.
One thing I’ve noticed in Japan — few Japanese think deeply about what a given holiday is all about. Contrary to the image Americans had of Japan in the 80’s, all Japanese will gladly take a holiday, and generally don’t think deeply about the point of the day. November 23rd is Labor Thanksgiving Day, but you never seen any laborors being thanked — actually, they all seem to go out of their way to work on this day so they can earn extra money. In America, there are holidays to remember veterans who have both fought and died in past wars, but in Japan, there are few similar customs.
We’ve got some nice items for you today. Partially in commemoration of the holiday (?), we’ve got four new wacky Japanese T-shirts, including our most bizarre yet, a shirt with the 9th Amendment to the Japanese Constitution, which proclaims that Japan as a nation denounces war as a tool of state policy and promises to work for peace with all the nations of the world. There are three more wacky shirts posted as well — Looking for a Japanese Girlfriend” “I want to be Japanese” and “Dare to be Stupid.” See them on the Japanese T-shirt page.
