There certainly can be a lot of disasters in Japan. Earlier this year I visited a nice onsen hot springs in the mountains of Gunma with Mrs. J-List to celebrate my birthday, and ended up live-tweeting news about a big earthquake down in Osaka which claimed four lives. Once my mother visited Japan and managed to witness a killer typhoon, a large-ish earthquake plus the eruption of Mt. Asama, one of the most active volcanoes on Japan’s main island of Honshu, in the ten days she was here.
This week has been quite exciting. too. After a sweltering summer that saw temperatures reach 41℃/106°F causing 116 heat-related deaths (including several at a hospital whose air conditioning broke and was told it couldn’t be repaired for two months), we got Typhoon Jebi, the strongest typhoon to make landfall directly on the Japanese main islands in 25 years. Cars were blown around like children’s toys, roofs were ripped off and the Kansai Airport was closed for days from flooding. Just as Japan was starting the cleanup after the storm, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit the country’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, burying villages, ripping up streets and killing 8 (so far). Among other things, Hokkaido is the center of cattle farming in Japan, and the sprawling blackouts affecting 5 million people and businesses have put thousands of tons of primo wagyu in jeopardy. In response, some meat retailers and distributors are giving their valuable products to customers for free.
I know from experience that news of disasters in Japan can make some folks nervous about the prospect of coming to a land where the earth shakes sometimes. Let me assure you that Japan is one of the safest countries you could visit, and in the event something exciting happens, you’ll be able to get through it without incident. Then you’ll have some interesting stories to tell your grandkids, like the time you saw Mt. Fuji erupting!
