One thing I love about the world of anime and related fandom is that “dreams can come true.” It’s often the case that with diligence and hard work, amateur fan creators can get the chance to become professional artists, animators, singers, etc. A good example of this is Comiket, the huge doujinshi event held every August and December, where amateur creators can sell their newest works directly to the public and, if they’re good, develop a following by fans and collectors. Often these creators become so popular, they’re able to go pro, making mainstream games, comics and anime.
There are dozens of examples. Pretty much every artist you love, from Yoshitoshi ABe to Rumiko Takahashi to CLAMP, got their start drawing doujinshi comics before getting their big break. I’ve Sound was an amateur music group that made BGM tracks for visual novels in Hokkaido (including several that we’ve published in English) before getting their big break with Kanon and Air and becoming professional BGM creators for mainstream anime. It also happened to Nitroplus founder Digitaro: Macross creator Shoji Kawamori liked the doujinshi he was drawing, which led to a job offer, which eventually led to an amazing life creating games and anime professionally.
It’s also what happened to incredibly talented artist Yom, who started to make his mark in the world a few years ago by penning fabulously gorgeous doujinshi centered around a simple concept: girls wearing very dark, sexy tights. In book after book, he fleshed out his girls, showing them in common everyday settings, always with incredible detail paid to the feet, thighs and panties of the girls, the way the fibers of the tights would look close up, and even the sheen of reflected light off the material.
Now his hard work has paid off with Miru Tights, a short sexy tights anime based on his characters and illustrations. And it’s a great show, with each episode a snapshot into the lives of his characters, with outstanding detail given to the visual elements of the tights as the girls go about their daily activities. It’s a fun show that can be enjoyed either as a slice-of-life about three high school girls (and their hot teacher), or it can be enjoyed on a more elemental level, if you like the tights fetish angle. What I’m most impressed with is how well the animators took the detailed style of Yom-sensei and converted it into on-screen animation.
