What would you do if you learned that you had been switched at birth and that the family that raised you wasn’t actually yours? How would that complicate your life, especially when you grew up and were ready to choose a romantic partner? That’s the concept behind the currently airing anime A Couple of Cuckoos, aka Kakkou no Iinazuke, a baby-switching romantic comedy that I’m enjoying a lot. Let’s look at the series!
The Story of A Couple of Cuckoos
Nagi Umino has always felt he was kind of “different” from his family, and one day he learns the reason: he’s not actually their biological son. It turns out that a hospital accident caused him to be switched at birth with Erika Amano, who is now a famous influencer on Instagram. To fix the error of the switched babies, both sets of parents decide to make an arranged marriage between their children, forcing Erika and Nagi to get married, thus uniting the two families. What could go wrong?
The story follows a fairly predictable rom-com route. Nagi and Erika don’t want to be forced to get married, yet they must live in the same house together. The possible romance between them is complicated when Sachi, who was raised alongside Nagi but now knows she’s not related to him, starts to have feelings for her brother. And Nagi has his sights set on Hiro, Nagi’s classmate, who is the top student in her class and has declared that she could only love someone smart than her… which is why Nagi studies so hard.
It’s basically a fun romantic comedy anime that’s relaxing in a turn-your-brain-off sort of way. Unlike some shows — *cough* The Fruit of Evolution, Osamake *cough* — which were annoying because they were so insultingly generic, the characters in A Couple of Cuckoos are all likable and fun to watch. Also, it’s touching to see Erika and Sachi, blood-related sisters who weren’t able to grow up together, come to love and support each other.
Another reason to watch the series is…
Boobs! Because of course, there are boobs.
Background on the Story
The story of A Couple of Cuckoos is highly referential to a popular 2013 Japanese film called Like Father, Like Son (in Japanese, Soshite Chichi ni Naru), about two male babies who are switched at birth, and the pain two families must endure as they try to come together to find a middle ground between their two very different lifestyles. The film is great, but as a father, it’s a hard movie for me to watch, since the concept is so horrifying emotionally. The film is famous in J-List’s home prefecture of Gunma because it was filmed in Maebashi, and won accolades at the Cannes film festival.
Another Reason I Love Kakkou no Iinazuke: Megumi’s In It!
Another reason I love Kakkou no Iinazuke: it stars J-List’s official mascot Megumi, in the form of Nagi’s sister Sachi! How can I not love that?
