Indecent Proposal is a massive anthology, sitting at a whopping 264 pages and 17 chapters. Thankfully, the beefy size of the book means that we get an even better sampling of the kinds of characters and stories Minato Fumi has in his head. Every story in this book featured a totally different and instantly iconic girl. While their body types didn’t wildly differentiate beyond the size of their breasts, their faces and designs were so well-varied that I still felt like each girl was totally different from the last. Even the male characters, while mostly consisting of black-haired self-inserts, have a lot of thought put into their personalities and designs that kept things fresh and engaging.
It helps that the art in Indecent Proposal is consistently high-quality and absolutely gorgeous. There are incredible thought and care put into each line on the page, with female anatomy that had the perfect balance between realistic accuracy and erotic stylization. Some women in the story have short, slender frames that contrast nicely with the tall and burly men they sleep with. Other girls are busty and curvy, enveloping the small and skinny guy of their dreams with pillowy breasts and plush thighs. Every sex scene in the book is drawn with vivid quality that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
Even the more mundane aspects of the art, though, have incredible amounts of care put into them. As good as the sex scenes of Indecent Proposal are, Minato Fumi’s art shines brightest when it comes to illustrating expressive characters and facial expressions. There isn’t a much comedy in Indecent Proposal; all of the stories are the kind of standard fare you’d expect from the tone of a hentai anthology, from melancholic romance tales to downright horny stories of intense sexual action. Still, they’ve all got an extra coat of polish to them thanks to the wonderful way each character is drawn. Every facial expression I saw in this book was packed full of emotion and dynamic energy, making these lead-up scenes just as enjoyable to read as the naughty moments. There’s a natural and sweet style to the art of Minato Fumi that makes me feel like he’d excel in a career at drawing regular manga thanks to how gorgeous his art is.
As big of a volume as Indecent Proposal is, there aren’t too many bonuses or special insert pages in the book. I always look forward to the full-color illustrations in hentai volumes, but there isn’t much of that here. There are a couple of back-cover drawings done in color, along with a bonus 1-page color manga at the end of the book. The only significant instance of colored work in the manga is a set of 4 pages at the start of the opening chapter, titled Runaway Cousin.
This story is about a young man named Takumi, and his beautiful cousin Isaki. She lives out in the country with the other side of the family, so they usually only see each other when the family gathers up there for the holidays. Takumi was supposed to go up there again with his family this summer, but since he had to study for tests over the break, he decided to stay home alone. Out of nowhere, his dark-skinned cousin Isaki shows up at his house saying she had run away from home. She’s happy to be there, but when she catches Takumi trying to call her family in secret, she decides to silence him with a little skin-on-skin action.
After she takes his virginity, though, things take a turn that she wasn’t expecting. Takumi’s mom calls him up asking if his cousin is there because the family in the country said she had run away. While his mom is concerned, the entire family of Isaki’s family doesn’t seem worried at all. In fact, her auntie grabs the phone and tells Takumi that, if his cousin were there, she would probably be confessing to him because she’s actually in love with him. They hang up, and with Isaki now put on the spot by her auntie, the two share their feelings for each other and spend the rest of the night making love.
If any chapter in Indecent Proposal deserved to have a full-color opening, it was absolutely this one. Isaki has a gorgeous tanned body with pale tanlines under her clothes, and the way those colors contrast in the colored opening pages was absolutely gorgeous. There’s an incredible, soft tone to the way each character is colored where they don’t have bright, shiny lights bouncing off of them. It gives their bodies a nice, matte kind of look that helps add a sense of softness and depth to them in those first few pages. The rest of the story is just as beautiful in black and white, though. The dynamic between Isaki and our protagonist Takumi is delightful, and the pages where Takumi is on the phone with their family as Isaki freaks out hearing them reveal that she’s in love is hilarious. This story is equal parts sweet and sexy, and an absolute highlight of the volume.
Indecent Proposal is a wonderful, massive collection of stories by Minato Fumi. There’s a sweet, low-key aura to the art of this book that translates into the storytelling as well. Characters in this volume are sometimes fun, sometimes sad, but always well realized. The lack of bonuses and full-color pages is a bummer, but this is still a high-quality book absolutely worth checking out.
