In my years working for J-List, I’ve gotten to cover many great fan events in Japan. Remember when Aoi Yūki spanked her fans at her meet and greet? Good times. This, however, tops even that as an idol group in Tokyo has invented a new game that is certain to sweep the otaku world… Whack-an-Otaku!
Alright, before we get to the video of the event, let’s talk about the context as this isn’t something that you can just look at without knowing what you’re witnessing. The event in question where this new game was invented is the Tokyo Idol Festival Gakuen Spring School Festival, which is an offshoot event of the Tokyo Idol Festival.
Since this event was being hosted by Belle Époque fashion school, the participating idol groups had to not only present musical performances but also “class projects” which led to idol group Shisso Crayon inventing the Whack-an-Otaku booth. Alright, now you can watch the video.

As you can see, each idol was in charge of whacking a single otaku. That pretty much guaranteed that every time the otaku in question raised their head, they would be met with a bop on the head with the 100 yen store plastic hammer. Luckily, it seems that none of them minded all that much and were more than happy to raise their heads for the cause and pay 1000 yen for the privilege while they were at it.
Honestly, I can absolutely see this taking off at otaku events around the world and if the group hasn’t found a way of trademarking this idea yet, they should get on that in a hurry. Can you imagine maid cafes around the world opening their own versions of Whack-an-Otaku booths? Now, that’s a gold mine waiting to happen!
If you were in a Whack-an-Otaku booth, who would you hope would be the one bopping you on the head and while you’re at it, which toy from the J-List store would you want to be bopped by?
