When the Komi Can’t Communicate anime premiered on Netflix last year, it became an instant hit with fans of the manga and new viewers alike. Netflix choosing a weekly release format instead of the usual full-season dump helped fuel the fervor by forcing fans to wait to see what Komi, Tadano, and friends would get up to each week. Now, after a much too short first season, fans have got the announcement they’ve been waiting for: Komi Can’t Communicate is getting a second season!
The announcement was sent out along with this stunning key visual giving us a look at what to expect for the second season. For the first season’s visuals, Komi was surrounded by others but still placed in a way that makes her separate from them, with the exception of Tadano. Now, Komi takes up more space and she’s front and center. All her friends and classmates are there, but they don’t surround her. Instead, they’re relegated to the background while still doing their own thing. Even Tadano, while not sharing space in the foreground, keeps an eye on Komi while keeping Najimi literally at arm’s length. The sky’s giving us a glimpse of moments sure to be important later in the season, but no one else is looking at them but us.
What also seems to be important to this season is the theme of fall. While most anime tend to focus on the other three seasons, fall usually gets left behind as the season lacks a lot of the events seen in a slice-of-life or school-based anime. It’s literally a mid-way point for students, as the second semester of the school year in Japan starts in early September and ends in December. That feels fitting as a theme for the next season, as Komi has made considerable progress, but still has a ways to go. Not to mention that several characters are currently in their last year of high school, such as Tadano and Najimi. It’ll be interesting to see how next season will go, especially if Komi has to keep up her hard work without them.
No matter what happens this season, surely fans will be waiting with cat ears on. The second season premieres on April 6th at midnight, on TV Tokyo, Osaka, and Aichi. While the first season was exclusively available on Netflix from its premiere date, there’s currently no word on when the second season will make it to streaming platforms.
For those unfamiliar with Komi Can’t Communicate, a synopsis is below:
The journey to 100 friends begins with a single conversation.
Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve! With the whole student body keeping their distance and Komi unable to utter a single word, friendship might be forever beyond her reach.
Timid Tadano is a total wallflower, and that’s just the way he likes it. But all that changes when he finds himself alone in a classroom on the first day of high school with the legendary Komi. He quickly realizes she isn’t aloof — she’s just super awkward. Now he’s made it his mission to help her on her quest to make 100 friends!
