The adventures of the great hikikomori vampire princess are now being adapted to anime, giving fans of the shut-in royal a chance to see her in action on the screen. Fans of Terakomari Gandesblood will have to wait a bit longer for The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess to begin streaming since there is only a vague 2023 release date. But the first trailer should provide plenty to sate anyone’s appetite for cute vampire girl goodness in the meantime.
In addition to two different home pages offering more insights into the world of The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, Studio Project No.9 has set up an official Twitter account. It posted a key visual and two promo images drawn by the original light novel artist Riichu.
The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess follows the story of Terakomari, or Komari for short, three years into her shut-in lifestyle. She leaves the safety of her room to discover that she was appointed as a Commander in the Mulnite Imperial Army during her time of peaceful slumber. Komari faces an uphill battle, as her new army tends to overthrow their leaders at the slightest hint of weakness. Komari herself has refused to drink blood, making her physically and magically weak compared to her prestigious lineage. Fortunately, her powerful and dutiful maid Villhaze, who is infatuated with Komari, has offered her services.
The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, known in Japan as Hikikomari Kyūketsu Hime no Monmon (Hikikomari Vampire Princess’s Agony), began as a light novel series written by Kotei Kobayashi and illustrated by Riichu in 2020. A total of nine volumes have been published so far. Riichu started work on the manga adaptation in 2021, and a complete volume is available as of this writing.
For a bit of background information, in the series, Komari is declared to be a hikikomori, meaning “pulling inward, being confined.” A hikikomori is someone who shuts themselves away from society and decides to remain indoors for one reason or another, such as societal pressures, in extreme social isolation. They’ve been referred to as hermits as they scarcely, if ever, venture outdoors. In more extreme cases, hikikomori will primarily stay in their rooms rather than spend time in other parts of the house.
The Japanese title, Hikikomari Kyūketsu Hime no Monmon, is a pun that combines the words hikikomori and Terakomari, the main character’s name, forming the title Hikikomari. This pun was lost in the localization process, it seems.
