A new anime series about a cute angel descending upon a lucky guy has appeared. As precious as Lily is, she is almost as adoring as Towa from Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included. The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil (Oroka na Tenshi wa Akuma to Odoru) follows an angel and a demon conspiring for their sides. Their conflicting ideals lead them to a fight, but there are no hard feelings by the end of it. We’ll see how close these two get when the series premieres in January 2024. Until then, the trailer below might give us an idea.
Sawayoshi Azuma first released his manga series, The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil, on June 27, 2016. ASCII Media Works has since released sixteen volumes in Dengeki Maoh.
Our demon and a couple of Best Girl candidates are as follows:
- Masatora Akutsu — Yuma Uchida (Shinomori Aoshi in Rurouni Kenshin). A demon assigned to Earth to find a charismatic human to inspire Hell’s forces to fight against the angels.
- Lily Amane — Ayane Sakura (Orio in Pokémon Horizons: The Series). An angel from Heaven ordered to eliminate demons on Earth. She has her own scheme to reform Heaven.
- Liz — Rie Kugimiya (Haumea in Fire Force). Masatora’s boss who gave him his current job. She resents the angels for hunting demons and humiliating them regularly.
Studio Children’s Playground Entertainment has set up a home page and Twitter page to promote The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil. Fans and potential viewers can find behind-the-scenes information and the Key Visual there.
Angel vs. Devil, a Battle of Wits and Affection
The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil is one of those self-descriptive titles. Masatora Akutsu, a demon from Hell, needed to aid his people. Heaven has invaded Hell, and angels now hunt devils for sport. These supposed divine beings also humiliate demons regularly. The devils themselves laze about in response. It’s not even a battle at this point. So now Masatora must journey to Earth to find a charismatic human who can inspire his fellow demons to fight back.
Unfortunately for him, the first charismatic human turns out to be Lily Amane, a cute girl who turns out to be an angel. Though Masatora can break through her chains and pose an actual threat to her, Lily binds him and places a collar around his neck that effectively makes him her slave. His plan to help Hell was in jeopardy. But her plan to use him to reform Heaven is right on track. Masatora now waits for a chance to escape her binds while he uncovers more about Lily’s true nature.
