It’s the end of an era… I guess?
Manga creator Bow Ditama has posted on his official Twitter account that his long-running ecchi romantic comedy Kiss x Sis will come to an end in the next two chapters. That isn’t to say that the series will end within the next two issues of Monthly Young magazine as the series only runs periodically, but the creator is actively working on wrapping it up.
If you’re not familiar with Kiss x Sis, the main premise behind the series is that the main character is a high school student who has twin step-sisters who want to have sex with him. In fact, every single member of the family wants him to have sex with them, and yet he refuses to let the act actually happen. For 24 volumes, this series has been doing just about everything but the actual deed, and now it’s all coming to a close.
It’s hard to put into words how weird it is for this series to be ending after running for almost 20 years. You heard that right, this is a series that has been a semi-popular entry in the ecchi category since 2004. It got a TV anime adaptation and a long-running OAD series for the gods’ sake!
In my younger weeb days, I counted myself as a fan of this series and actively looked forward to the release of new OAD episodes. No joke, you can go back through my Twitter history and find examples of that if you search hard enough. As I grew older, however, the urine jokes that Bow Ditama is famous for (again seriously; the man loves his pee jokes) grew stale, and I moved on to other ecchi series instead. I had honestly pretty much forgotten about this series until I saw the announcement cross my news feed.
It’s hard to break through as a manga artist and when you find something that works, you tend to stick with it. Bow Ditama found something that worked and was successful with it for almost two decades. You can curse the content all you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that he made a name for himself and will live on in people’s memories, which is a lot more than what many of us will be able to say upon our death.
So for the creator who entertained so many around the world, I salute you.
