Spice and Wolf isn’t the only series attempting to make it big in the virtual reality world. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched on Makuake to create a brand new virtual reality story for the popular series Teasing Master Takagi-san (Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san). Aiming to raise fifteen million yen (about $140,000 USD), the campaign will allow users to take on the role of Nishikata and get relentlessly teased by Takagi-san while walking home from school or visiting the beach. As of this writing, the campaign has raised over seven million yen but has 46 more days to raise the remaining funds.
As with other crowdfunding campaigns, the rewards that backers can pick up are quite varied. If you just want to help support the project by tossing in 1,000 yen you’ll get a special thank you message from Takagi-san. If you want to really help push this project past their goal, you can go for the highest tier which is 2.5 million yen and features a life-sized statue of Takagi-san (this is limited to one person so collect your spare change quickly if you plan on backing at this level).
Oddly though, unlike other crowdfunding campaigns, the final product will not be included in any of the tiers and will need to be purchased separately when it’s released in December 2019 for the Oculus Quest (the staff says on the campaign page that they want to release it on other platforms as well).
Teasing Master Takagi-san started as a manga series created by Soichiro Yamamoto. It began its run in Monthly Shōnen Sunday Mini magazine in June 2013 before moving to Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine in July, 2016. The series received its first TV anime adaptation in January 2018 and received a second season in July 2019.
Yen Press holds the English language rights to the manga and describes the story as:
Middle schooler Nishikata has had it with his classmate Takagi — the chronic teaser who sits nearby. Day in and day out, she comes after him with every sort of trick or prank. Even when he tries to get her back, she’s always one step ahead. But rest assured, it’s only the beginning. He’s not about to give up that easily in this battle of cunning and youth!
