The Urusei Yatsura reboot was unexpected but not unwelcome. It is, after all, a legendary and influential franchise. The classic tale of a cute oni girl coming to Earth and falling in love with a human is returning for its second season. If you missed her the first time around, take the time to catch up. She was my personal choice for waifu of 2022. The new season will begin airing on January 12th, 2024. Let’s enjoy the new trailer until we can ring in the new year with Lum.
The legendary mangaka Rumiko Takahashi created the original manga series Urusei Yatsura between September 24th, 1978, and February 4th, 1987. Shogakukan published all 34 volumes in Weekly Shonen Sunday.
Our attempted harem protagonist and two of the girls who like him but hate his lecherous tendencies are as follows:
- Ataru Moroboshi — Hiroshi Kamiya (Shinji Mato from Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works). Ataru was selected to save the world in a game of tag against alien invaders. He’s frequently seen chasing other girls and running away from the one girl who wants to marry him.
- Lum — Sumire Uesaka (Hayase Nagatoro in Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro). Lum is an Oni alien hailing from the planet Oniboshi. The fate of Earth was decided with a game of tag. A misunderstanding caused her to accept a “proposal” from Ataru.
- Shinobu Miyake — Maaya Uchida (Kaguya Yamai in Date A Live). Ataru’s childhood friend was the one who made a deal with him that set the events of Urusei Yatsura into motion.
David Production has maintained a home page and an official Twitter (X) page to promote Urusei Yatsura. Additional series information and some nice Key Visuals can be found there.
Urusei Yatsura Launches Second Invasion
Urusei Yatsura begins with the invasion of Earth. Oni aliens from beyond the stars have decided to invade, and they cut a deal with its inhabitants for the planet’s future. Ataru Moroboshi is chosen to represent Earth in a game of tag against the Oni princess Lum. Ataru is a perverted high school student who spends most of his time chasing girls, so he’s not exactly the hero type. However, Ataru’s childhood friend Shinobu Miyake, a girl with whom he shares mutual feelings, promises to marry him if he wins. Thus, the race is on.
Ataru wins the game of tag and declares his intention to get married. Lum takes this as a proposal and agrees to become his wife. This misunderstanding causes its own trials and tribulations for all involved. Ataru is a lech, which causes both Shinobu and Lum to lash out at him. What’s a guy to do when numerous threats to Earth (and beyond) come to his doorstep, but all he wants to do is flirt with cute girls?
Cute Oni Girls Rebooted
This Urusei Yatsura adaptation first aired on October 14th, 2022. There are options if you can’t wait to see more of Lum and Ataru’s adventures. Beyond Rumiko Takahashi’s original manga series, which any good, cultured otaku should have read by now, there is also the original anime adaptation. That series aired from October 14th, 1981, to March 19th, 1986. There are 194 episodes, about a dozen OVAs, and six films to enjoy. That’s hours and hours of a cute girl in an oni bikini outfit. Kazunori Ito and Mamoru Ishii worked on this iteration, likely contributing to its legendary status.
