Record of Ragnarok‘s own English-language Twitter account uploaded a trailer, but it ironically lacks subtitles. It does, however, share a series of drawings by the manga artist Ajichika, who seems to be just as excited for Record of Ragnarok II to begin airing. Ajichika drew three of the matchups that were already teased in the trailer: Jack the Ripper Vs. Heracles, Raiden Tameemon vs Shiva, and Buddha vs Zerofuku.
Record of Ragnarok takes place in a fantasy world where just about every god exists, and a significant amount of them want to destroy humanity, finding them sinful and not worthy of existing. The Gods’ Council assembled and decided that humanity had a good run, and it’s time to end the party. However, the valkyrie Brunhilde posed a different option, the Valhalla Constitution, article No. 62, paragraph 15 of the super special clause: Ragnarok, a tournament where humanity could fight against the very gods themselves and earn a 1000-year reprieve from extinction.
Initially, the gods were against it, but Brunhilde played on their pride and ego and suggested that they might be afraid, since Ragnarok was a battle against souls, and death meant their souls would be destroyed and turned to ashes. So, no possibility of revival or reincarnation. The gods agreed, if only to show Brunhilde up. In reality, they played into her hands, since she has her own grievance against the gods.
Humans from different periods of history, and different countries and cultures, were brought together to fight for Humanity. The warlord Lu Bu, the first human Adam, the serial killer Jack the Ripper, and the brilliant scientist Nikola Tesla, are set against the Greek god Zeus, the Hindu god Shiva, the Norse god Thor, and the Egyptian god Anubis.
Record of Ragnarok, known in Japan as Shuumatsu no Valkyrie (Doomsday Valkyrie), and also known as Shuumatsu no Valkyrie: Record of Ragnarok, was first brought to life as a manga series written by Takumi Fukui and Shinya Umemura, and illustrated by Ajichika. The first chapter was published on November 25th, 2017, and the series continues to this day, with a total of 17 volumes collected thus far.
Jack the Ripper proved to be popular enough to get his own spin-off manga series titled Jack the Ripper Case Files (Kitan: Jack the Ripper no Jikenbo), which began publication on October 25th, 2022, and continues to this day. This series follows Jack before his time fighting in Ragnarok. It’s learned here that his twisted personality comes from a traumatic childhood, wherein his own mother saw him as only a means to leave poverty.
As stated in the previous article concerning Record of Ragnarok‘s anime adaptation, studio Graphinica took up the task of adapting the manga. The first season aired all at once on June 17th, 2021, and was streamed via Netflix.
