I have good news, and I have bad news with this article. The good news is that a brand new anime has been announced complete with a promotional video, key visual, and cast and crew listings. The bad news is that, for the life of me, I can’t tell what the story is supposed to be about.
The series in question is an original work titled Gekidol which is set to premiere in January 2021 and before we get into all the details, let’s take a look at the promotional video which was released along with the announcement.
Here’s what we know about the crew bringing this series to life; producing the animation will be studio Hoods Entertainment with Shigeru Ueda serving as director and working off scripts created collectively by the Geikidol Production Committee. Sei Tateishi will provide character designs while Prhythm / exx is credited with the music.
The character voices will be provided by the following actors (character names first):
Morino Seria: Hikaru Akao
Each affair Airi: Chihira Mochida
Izumi Hinasaki: Ayaka Suwa
Kaoru Sakakibara: Kana Hanazawa
Doll: M ・ A ・ O
Asagi Akira: Nozomi Yamamoto
Aimi Fujita: Asami Takano
Kazuharu Yamamoto: Aya Akiyoshi
Mayuri Nakamura: Amina Sato
Hirokazu Takezaki: Kosuke Toriumi
Makoto Higuchi: Sarara Yashima
Tomoko Hinata: Kaori Mizuhashi
And while it doesn’t make a lot of sense (to me at least), the plot synopsis is described as:
Five years after the mysterious disaster and the disappearance of simultaneous cities around the world
Although the world was in turmoil, it was gradually recovering.
In such a world
Fascinated by theatrical performances using the “Theatrical Material System” using 3D holograms
There were girls aiming for a shining stage
With each thought in mind
Now the stage curtain is up
From what I can tell, this is going to be another virtual idol series with a touch of dystopian nightmare for good measure, which could be great… or it could be a train wreck. Only time will tell in this case.
