How would you like to have your ex-girlfriend as your new step-sibling? That’s the premise behind a brand new romantic comedy anime, My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex (Japanese title: Mamahaha no Tsurego ga Moto Kano Datta), which will premiere before 2022 comes to a close. Ready to dive in and learn all about this new twist on the forbidden sibling romance trope?
If you didn’t recognize the voices in that promotional video (or were too distracted by the “plot”), this series will star Hiro Shimono as Mizuto Irido and Rina Hidaka as his ex-girlfriend turned step-sister, Yume Irido.
For those of you out there who care more about the crew, we have good news, as the announcement came with the names of a few primary crew members, including the production studio. Studio project No.9 will handle the animation production with Shinsuke Yanagi handling the director’s duties. Deko Akao is writing the scripts and Katsuyuki Sato will adapt the character designs for the anime.
If you hadn’t already guessed it by the title, this is meant to be a love comedy. In the story, the two main characters are a middle school couple who break up before entering high school. At first, Mizuto is excited about making a fresh new start at his new high school. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned and his high school life is turned upside down by the fact that not only is his ex-girlfriend attending the same school as him, but she’s also now his new step-sister!
Originally a light novel series written by Kyōsuke Kamishiro and illustrated by Takayaki, My Stepmom’s Daughter is my Ex began its physical run under Kadokawa’s Sneaker Bunko imprint in December 2018, the series is up to seven volumes in Japan as of July 2021. The series is being released in English by J-Novel Club and has two complete volumes available on their website as of this writing.
