Originally a manga created by Jun Mochizuki, who you might remember as the creator of another popular work, Pandora Hearts. This is another dark drama, except this one takes place in 19th century Paris. In this story, the main character is a vampire named Noé Archiviste. He meets a man who says that he can heal vampires of their predatory desires which cause them to attack others unwillingly, using something called The Book of Vanitas. Deciding to team up, the pair seek out vampires who wish to be healed while a hidden evil makes moves in the background.
The series has been serialized in Monthly Gangan Joker magazine since December 2015 and is up to eight volumes, both in Japanese and English. The manga went on hiatus for a few months last year due to the pandemic but returned before the end of 2020.
The anime adaptation was first announced at AnimeJapan in March 2021. The animation will be produced by studio BONES and features Tomoyuki Itamura as the director. This is significant since this is their first director gig since leaving studio SHAFT in the latter half of the last decade. They will work off scripts written by Deko Akao and character designs created by Yoshiyuki Ito. It will premiere this coming July.
Honestly, all this series had to say was that they had recruited Yuki Kajiura to do the background music and I would’ve watched. Add in a proven director, the powerhouse animation of studio Bones, and a writer who knows exactly what she’s doing at all times and you have the makings for a summer anime blockbuster!
