Mash, a student magician who uses muscle power instead of magic, made us laugh in the spring of 2023. The series continues this January 2024, with Mashle’s second season recounting the Divine Visionaries arc from the completed manga. The main cast and staff from A-1 Pictures are intact as the story picks up from last season. Producer Aniplex has a subtitled preview introducing new characters, the Divine Visionaries.
I see a distinct lack of creampuffs here. The premise remains the same, though — Mash needs to join the top ranks of the magic world to stop it from discriminating against those who can’t use magic. Can the mashup of Harry Potter, One-Punch Man, and Mob Psycho become a Divine Visionary through muscle power alone? If he gets enough creampuffs, anything is possible!
Mashle Has New Puffs to Cream
Mashle’s second season is more a divided two-cour anime than a sequel, so you can review this fun post about the first season here. This arc will be less about the magic academy and its dorm factions as Mash starts confronting the hierarchy of the magic system itself. Let’s meet the new villains and potential allies!
- Ryoh Grantz — Junichi Suwabe (Shouta Aizawa from My Hero Academia). A Divine Visionary, the Light Cane, and the captain of the Magic Security Forces.
- Orter Madl — Yuuki Ono (Louis from BEASTARS). A Divine Visionary, the Desert Cane, and a Magical Power Administration member, a subdivision of the Bureau of Magic.
- Kaldo Gehenna — Nobunaga Shimazaki (Shidou Itsuka from Date A Live). A Divine Visionary, the Flame Cane, and Head of the Magic Talent Administration, a subdivision of the Bureau of Magic.
- Renatus Revol — Kishou Taniyama (Dark Schneider from BASTARD!!). A Divine Visionary, the Immortal Cane, and a member of the Magical Cemetery Administration, a subdivision of the Bureau of Magic.
- Agito Tyrone — Mute! Mashle has fun character designs! A Divine Visionary, the Dragon Cane, and a member of the Magical Creatures Administration, a subdivision of the Bureau of Magic.
- Tsurara Halestone — Tomori Kusunoki (Terakomari Gandesblood from The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess). A Divine Visionary, the Ice Cane, and a member of the Magic Research Administration, a subdivision of the Bureau of Magic.
- Sophina Brivia — Saori Hayami (Yor from Spy x Family). A Divine Visionary, the Knowledge Cane, and a Forbidden Magical Texts Administration member, a subdivision of the Bureau of Magic.
- Rayne Ames — Yuuki Kaji (Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan). A Divine Visionary, the Sword Cane, and a Magic Tools Administration member, a subdivision of the Bureau of Magic. We know him as Finn’s older brother and the Adora Dormitory supervisor.
Mash’s Friends Through Thick and Thin Creampuffs
Here’s a refresher on the Mashle main cast.
- Mash Burnedead — Chiaki Kobayashi (Gabimaru from Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku). The muscley Mash loves working out and eating cream puffs.
- Finn Ames — Reiji Kawashima (Jonas Anders from Sugar Apple Fairy Tale). Mash’s roommate at Easton Magic Academy.
- Lance Crown — Kaito Ishikawa (Sakuta Azusagawa from Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai). The neat freak is at the top of Mash’s class.
- Dot Barrett — Takuya Eguchi (Loid Forger from SPY x FAMILY). The noisy boy hates good-looking guys but loves all girls.
- Lemon Irvine — Reina Ueda (Kanao Tsuruyi from Demon Slayer). She loves Mash and imagines they do all sorts of things together.
The Mashle manga ended in July 2023, and Aniplex claimed in July 2022 that it would receive a “complete” anime adaptation. Will the Winter 2023 season be its last one? Or is there more story to tell beyond the Divine Visionaries arc? I only need to see Mash go crazy over creampuffs. Will you be watching the continuation? Let us know in the comments below or online on Facebook, Twitter, or Discord.
If you’re a fan of muscles like Mash, the J-List store has a section for you! Artist 23 loves drawing tanned, muscle-bound girls. Pick up this tapestry of his original character, Sela, for Christmas!
