Madoka Magica was a hit series back in 2011. Anime fans at the time had no idea what to make of the story or crazy visuals produced by studio SHAFT. Over the years, the series has earned its spot in anime history as the series that reinvented the dark magical girl genre and paved the way for more titles that would air later in the decade. What many people don’t realize, however, is that Madoka Magica didn’t end with the anime. It’s been thriving for the last few years in various spinoff manga and a mobile game titled Magia Record, which was finally released in English in mid-2019.
At a fan event held at the end of November, the premiere date for the upcoming anime adaptation of Magia Record was revealed at the end of a brand new promotional video! In the over two-minute-long video, we get a very good look at all the primary characters, plus a preview of the ending theme sung by ClariS.

As seen in the video, the premiere date for Magia Record has been locked in for January 4th, 2020. This series is adapting the mobile game Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story, which recently celebrated its second anniversary. The game itself is based on the original hit dark magical girl anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which aired back in 2011.
In the original series, the story follows a young girl named Madoka Kaname who discovers that magical girls exist in the world but that their lifestyle is not as glamorous as it first appears. Meanwhile, a mysterious girl named Homura has appeared at her school and seems hellbent on keeping Madoka from signing the magical girl contract with the strange creature named Kyubey. In the side story mobile game, the story follows a young girl named Iroha who is searching for her missing sister in the city of Kamihama.
