If you happened to be awake in the late hours of Sunday, January 23rd, you might’ve caught the faint sound of screaming coming from manga readers all over the world. The reason for this would be because one of the most popular comedy manga ever, author Satoshi Mizukami’s Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, is finally getting a television anime adaptation! Details are scarce at the moment, but we know some primary members of the staff along with a firm premiere season.
While no animation studio has been confirmed for this production as of this writing, it is worth noting that studio Nippon Animation retweeted the initial announcement from Mizukami on Twitter. That could mean absolutely nothing, but it’s still interesting nonetheless. In terms of crew, Mizukami will team with Yuichiro Momose to work on the series scripts together while Nobuaki Nakanishi is sitting in the director’s chair. According to the initial announcement, the series will air during the summer 2022 season.

While I’ve never actually gotten around to reading Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer myself (despite the fact that it’s available to read legally in multiple places online), anyone who reads manga regularly is likely to have at least heard of this series.
Originally serialized from April 2005 to August 2010 in the seinen magazine Young King OURs, they eventually compiled the series into ten volumes. As mentioned, the series is available in both print and digital in English via Seven Seas Entertainment, Crunchyroll Manga, and Bookwalker.
In the comedy series, the main character is a college student named Yuuhi who wakes up to find a lizard in his bed one day. As with all mysterious mascot characters, this one comes with a mission for Yuuhi: save the world by teaming with a princess to defeat a space mage who wants to destroy the world with a giant mallet known as the Biscuit Hammer. At first, Yuuhi is uninterested in taking on the mission until he meets the princess, Samidare, who reveals that her mission is to defeat the mage so that she can destroy the world herself.
