The Pokémon franchise turns 27 years old today, and both The Pokémon Company and trainers worldwide are joining in the festivities! A special Pokémon Day 2023 presentation has been scheduled for February 27th at 6 a.m. PST. We’re not sure what will be in that. Still, I would bet it will have some info on expansions to Pokémon Scarlett & Violet, a trailer for the new anime series, updates on the Pokémon mobile games, and perhaps some more information about Pokémon Sleep or Detective Pikachu 2, both of which were revealed a few years ago and then just vanished like a wild Abra. Last year’s presentation marked the announcement of the new mainline games and much the same content as we predict for Pokémon Day 2023.
It’s incredibly wishful thinking, but I’d like to see a new Let’s Go game set in the Johto region or another game like Pokémon Legends Arceus. I’ve enjoyed my time with Pokémon Violet, but Arceus has become my favorite entry in the series. For fans of the Trading Card Game (TCG), update announcements are typically reserved for the World Championship tournament, held in August.
In 2020, we got this incredible animated music video for the song “Gotcha!” by Bump of Chicken. Check it out below.
Pokémon Day 2023 has already shown trainers worldwide celebrating by showing off their collections, art, and favorite memories. My favorite moment with the franchise has to be when my family would take me to our local Books-A-Million for weekly Pokémon League activities in the ’90s. It was one of the only ways I could find and interact with other like-minded players, given my age and the school I attended banned all things Pokémon. I had so much fun playing the TCG, the TCG Gameboy game, and Red/Blue with others. This was also how I found out about the now-legendary “MissingNo” glitch. I’ve shared some of my favorite Twitter posts below for the Pokémon Day 2023 celebration, from bizarre to cute.
Some lovely art celebrating all the starters and the systems they debuted on.

I have no idea what’s going on here. But it made me laugh really hard.

A beautiful watercolor piece reminiscent of Ken Sugimori’s old art centered on Johto’s legendary trio.

And finally, an impressively incredible collection!
