The long-awaited return of the middle-aged blade master is upon us! Beryl, the old country bumpkin, has spent a lifetime mastering the sword to pass his skills on to his students. His efforts pay off as his students grow into great heroes, knights, and adventurers. On the other hand, Beryl continues to live in obscurity while thinking little of his skills.
His beautiful former apprentice, Allucia, invites him to train the royal knights, pulling him out of his backwater existence. Her desire to train her knights to peak performance masks her romantic feelings for her older teacher. We’ll see how he deals with his new life in the limelight when From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman: My Hotshot Disciples Are All Grown Up Now and They Won’t Leave Me Alone (Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru: Tada no Inaka no Kenjutsu Shihan Datta noni, Taisei Shita Deshitachi ga Ore o Hottekurenai Ken) Season 2 premieres sometime in July 2026.

Shigeru Sagazaki released the original From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman novel on the user-generated novel website Shosetsuka ni Naro on November 17th, 2020. Shigeru Sagazaki and Tetsuhiro Nabeshima released the original light novel adaptation on April 7th, 2021. Square Enix has since published ten volumes in the SQEX Novel imprint. Kazuki Sato provided the art for the manga adaptation, which debuted on August 24th, 2021. Akita Shoten has published eight volumes in Dokodemo Young Champion.
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Cast
The older master and two of his adoring students are as follows:
- Beryl Gardinant — Hiroaki Hirata (Rikiya Yotsubashi “Re-Destro” from My Hero Academia). Beryl is a humble sword teacher who trained master swordswomen.
- Allucia Citrus — Nao Toyama (Takao and Atago from Kantai Collection). Allucia is the leader of the Knights of the Liberion Order. She is Beryl’s former student and harbors feelings for him.
- Surena Lysandra — Hitomi Ueda (Michiko Tendou from Chainsaw Man). Surena is a top-ranked adventurer whom Beryl has cared for since childhood.

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Forges a New Legend
Beryl Gardinant is a peerless sword instructor who hides himself in the countryside. Though he has trained some of the most influential knights and adventurers around, he still considers himself nothing more than a mundane swordsman. Beryl’s students all sing his praises as they leave to achieve their own dreams and ambitions, but only one returned to repay him. Allucia Citrus used what he taught her to become the youngest Commander of the Knights of the Liberion Order. She leads the royal knights, one arm of the kingdom’s great forces.
Allucia nominated Beryl to take over the Order’s instruction, and the King made it so by imperial decree. Beryl’s father pushes him out of the dojo and tells him to find a nice girl and get married in the capital. He quickly reunites with some former students, most of whom harbor romantic feelings for their middle-aged teacher. Beryl proves his true might by defeating Allucia’s Vice-Commander in a heated sparring match. He’ll need that strength to face down the dangers that lurk far beyond his countryside dojo.
