Alright, let’s put this rumor to rest once and for all… the newest and final Evangelion movie that we’ve been waiting years to see will not be six hours long. Post article.
Wait, you want more? Alright, let’s dig into this.
As we all know by now, it’s been a long time since the last Rebuild of Evangelion movie. In fact, for fans in Japan, it’s been almost eight years — the third Rebuild movie, titled Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, premiered in Japanese theaters in November 2012. For years now, original creator Hideaki Anno has been promising that studio Khara is working hard on the final movie and, in a recent tweet, he promised that it is coming soon. That’s not what fans glomped onto though, but rather a single image attached to the tweet which contained a strange timestamp which you can see at the top of the image below.
Immediately fans started to speculate on this and wondered out loud if this could be the run time for the movie, which would have it running for just under six hours and, being that this is Anno we’re talking about, the rumor found its legs and spread throughout the Internet like wildfire.
Luckily for everyone, studio Khara took to Twitter again recently and clarified that a six-hour-long Evangelion movie would be impossible and that the timestamp was a relic from filming in analog where footage was recorded on one-hour rolls. Whew!
各パートが1時間あるという意味ではなく pic.twitter.com/qZMFcoeTdb— 株式会社カラー (@khara_inc) October 7, 2020
I openly admit that while I’m not a fan of the original Evangelion television series, the Rebuild of Evangelion movies have been quite fun to watch over the last decade. However, there is no way that I could ever imagine sitting through a six-hour-long anime movie, no matter how revered the franchise might be.
Would you sit through six hours of Evangelion to see the brand new ending?
