The iconic Dragon Quest RPG series has been on a roll lately when it comes to delivering promising multi-media projects. The debut film of the series, a 3DCG spinoff titled Dragon Quest Your Story, premiered in Japan last year and is coming to Netflix worldwide soon. The continued success of the latest entry in the mainline series, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, has also led to incredible things like a promising Nintendo Switch re-release and the inclusion of the Luminary hero as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Now, Dragon Quest is ready to expand it’s hold on the world of mobile phone gaming with a brand new game titled Dragon Quest Tact.
As the name of the game implies, this upcoming mobile spinoff of the revered JRPG franchise is actually a tactical roleplaying game. In the game, players are tasked with commanding an army of iconic monsters from the original series in a variety of tactical battles. The game features a turn-based command battle system and square-based maps that will surely be familiar to anyone who’s a fan of tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Tactics Ogre. When opposing monsters meet on the map, they do battle.
Dragon Quest Tact is set to be a free-to-play game on iOS and Android and is currently targeting a 2020 release in Japan. Like any other mobile game, there will be a variety of in-app purchases available to enhance or expedite your experience. The game is being developed by Aiming, while Square Enix is in charge of planning and production for the game. Yuji Horii, the creator of the entire Dragon Quest series, is on board as the general director for the game. Akira Toriyama, the legendary Dragon Quest character designer who’s also known for creating Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, will also be returning to the game to design characters. Furthermore, long-time Dragon Quest music composer Koichi Sugiyama, who is most recently credited with work on Dragon Quest Your Story and Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken, will be composing music for Dragon Quest Tact.
While Dragon Quest Tact is currently only confirmed for a release in Japan, there’s another Dragon Quest mobile game that overseas fans will be able to experience soon. Dragon Quest of the Stars will be arriving on iOS and Android for global territories on February 25th. The mobile game is a much more standard RPG-style experience, where players get to customize their own character, explore a huge world, and do battle against iconic Dragon Quest monsters. The game has the largest world in the history of the series, and you won’t be exploring it alone thanks to a bevy of multiplayer events available in the game. The mobile RPG originally launched in Japan in October 2015 as Hoshi no Dragon Quest, and has so far been downloaded more than 50 million times. Series character designer Akira Toriyama has also contributed character designs to this game.
