Have you ever wanted to get your foot in the door of the anime industry as an artist but couldn’t because you don’t live in Japan or speak Japanese? Well then, I have some information that will greatly interest you.
In an announcement posted to his official Twitter profile on Friday, October 1st, anime director Seiji Kishi (Angel Beats, Assassination Classroom, and many others) posted a job opening for a new character designer for a currently unknown, upcoming project. While we may know nothing about what the artist chosen will work on as of yet, we know that Kishi and longtime collaborator and scriptwriter Makoto Uezu will be involved. We also know for certain (because it came from Kishi himself) that the artist chosen does not need to live in Japan or know any Japanese, and will be paid a fair wage for their work. The original Twitter post says that amateurs with no professional experience are welcome to apply.
Alright, sound good so far and you’re all set to apply to become the next big star in the anime industry? Coolness, here’s how you do it…
In order to apply for the position, all you have to do is email two of your best pieces, as a jpeg, to the email address [email protected] by October 20th and then sit at your computer endlessly hitting refresh on your email inbox until around the end of the year at which point the winning artist will be contacted. In a follow-up tweet, Kishi apologizes in advance for some applicants who may not be contacted by the end of the year as well for not being able to answer every single question regarding the position. The original report also noted that they will only use any art submitted to the email address for screening purposes.
Seiji Kishi is one of those directors where when he’s on his game, he produces some absolutely amazing works with examples that include the previously mentioned Angel Beats and both seasons of Assassination Classroom. However, he also has some less than stellar works on his resume, which already has me wondering what this new project is going to be like and if this job will be a dream come true for a lucky person or a nightmare that they don’t know is waiting for them.
