As announced in the 33rd issue of Weekly Shounen Champion!, Kentarou Satou’s dark magical girl manga Mahou Shoujo Site will finally come to an end in the magazine’s 35th issue. First released in 2013, with an anime released in 2018, this deconstruction of the magical girl genre shows readers what happens when you let unfortunate girls become magical girls, with dark, if not realistic, results.
Though long considered a copycat of the more popular, and considerably less dark Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the series manages to be both creative and humourous in turns and pulls no punches. I liken it to a crossover between Hell Girl and the magical girl genre, mostly due to both series using a website for the fulfillment of immediate, pressing desires without users knowing how that fulfillment is granted. The saccharine wish-granting, world-saving, power-of-love-and-friendship tropes do not apply here. There’s a reason it manages to hold a spot on J-List’s “Top 11 Anime Not Recommended for Beginners.”
The 35th issue of Weekly Shounen Champion! will be out on August 1st, with the 15th and final volume of the manga being released shortly after on August 8th. For those looking forward to the English volume of the manga, you’ll have to wait a bit, as English publisher Seven Seas Entertainment has only released nine volumes of the manga so far, with the ninth volume having been released in May. For those willing to wait to finish the series in its entirety, you could read the volumes released so far, watch the anime, get into Kentarou Satou’s equally dark magical girl manga Magical Girl Apocalypse, or just get into Madoka Magica if you want something slightly lighter in tone.
For those waiting on the ending of Mahou Shoujo Site, what are your thoughts? Will these misfortunate girls get anything resembling a happy ending? Or are you looking for more of a downer ending? Well, whatever happens, it’s sure to be quite the surprise!
