After being announced back in December 2022, fans of Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M: Kyūkoku no Orange were treated to a brief teaser trailer for the series. Unfortunately, this was little more than animated stills of the title character Daigo Toake, Shun Onda, and potential waifu Yuki Nakamura. Close-ups of these characters are interspersed with black-and-white images of what appear to be real-life firefighters in Japan. The anime series currently has a vague 2023 release window.
In addition to this brief teaser trailer, studio Sunrise set up an official Twitter account and home page for fans to bookmark and visit for additional series information, character bios, and art such as the key visual below.
Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M: Kyūkoku no Orange follows the titular character Daigo Toake as he goes from incident to incident, saving lives and putting out fires. The series portrays a more realistic depiction of firefighting. For instance, the characters will consider the material of the building structure, such as a school made with ferro-concrete as a base would be resistant to fire, and thus, the fire won’t spread as quickly. This is a stark contrast with Fire Force, since Daigo isn’t surrounded by hot girls and copious amounts of fanservice, or supernatural elements.
Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M (Megumi no Daigo) began as a manga series written and illustrated by Masahito Soda. The series ran from September 6th, 1995 to June 16th, 1999, in a total of twenty volumes. As an aside, the Japanese title, Megumi no Daigo, can also be read as “Great God of Fire”, an appropriate title for a series that’s all about firefighters.
Sunrise first began animating Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M in July 27th, 1999, with the release of a 45-minute anime film.
Fuji TV was the next to adapt Masahito Soda’s work. They developed and aired a live-action adaptation, spanning eleven episodes that ran from January 6th to March 16th in 2004.
Masahito Soda would return to the world of brave firefighters with Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M: Kyūkoku no Orange, on October 6th, 2020, and received assistance from Kuro Tomiyama to work on a new series following a new cast of characters, though the main character would retain the name “Daigo.” Though there is no official translation for “Kyūkoku no Orange“, it could be read as Orange Patriot. The series is ongoing, with six volumes currently available for fans to read.
