Well, this has to be slightly embarrassing for the production team behind the hit series Chainsaw Man. While only those in charge of the numbers know for sure, it appears that a porn parody of the hit series Chainsaw Man has outsold its source material by a margin of five to one.
Even if you haven’t been paying rapt attention to the anime scene for the last year, it would’ve been quite hard to go that entire time without at least hearing about the manga series and subsequent anime adaptation, Chainsaw Man. The story is about a down-on-his-luck teenager named Denji who, after being betrayed, is brought back to life by his pet demon and is hired to use his powers to destroy other devils with his new chainsaw hands (trust me, it’s not as far-fetched as it sounds) as he also pursues his ultimate goal of having sex.
The manga series found success in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2018 to 2020 before jumping over to Shonen Jump+ at the start of its second arc. In late 2022, the anime adaptation premiered to generous praise from fans and critics, with fans worldwide flocking to their screens weekly to see what would happen next. Unfortunately, this initial enthusiasm hasn’t produced the home video sales results that production studio MAPPA had hoped for. You could go as far as to say that the sales were pornographically abysmal. What does “pornographically abysmal” mean exactly? Well, as stated in the introduction, it means that if initial reports are correct, the porn parody of Chainsaw Man (creatively titled Dildo Man) sold vastly more DVDs and Blu-rays than the source material did.
According to reports posted to Kotaku and Screen Rant, the first volume of Chainsaw Man sold a mere 1,735 Blu-rays on its first week out in Japan. Meanwhile, the earlier mentioned Dildo Man sold about 8,600 copies in its first week.
It doesn’t mean that the anime is terrible by any stretch (it’s not; I watched it and loved it). However, these numbers may mean we see a new studio producing the animation if or when we get a second season.
