One of the most iconic and influential space opera anime series is returning. Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 (Yamato yo Towa ni: Rebel 3199) is a different take on the 1980 anime movie Be Forever Yamato. This updated Space Battleship Yamato project is set in seven movies split among the original 26 episodes. This series will premiere on July 19th, 2024, beginning with the first film, “Dark Invasion” (“Kuro no Shinryaku”). Until then, let’s enjoy the new trailer.
Leiji Matsumoto, Yoshinobu Nishizaki, and Eiichi Yamamoto originally created the Space Battleship Yamato (Uchu Senkan Yamato) franchise. It first appeared as an anime series from October 6th, 1974, to March 30th, 1975, in 26 episodes.
Two of the key characters in this series are as follows. Hopefully, the cast will reprise their former roles:
- Susumu Kodai — The commanding officer of Space Battleship Yamato. He is a brave and skilled officer who has contributed to many notable events in different conflicts.
- Yuki Mori — An officer serving aboard the Yamato and Susumu’s fiancée. She discovers an unexpected connection to Princess Yurisha Iscandar.
Studio MOTHER has maintained a home page and Twitter (X) page to promote Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199. You can find additional series information and the Key Visual there.
Forever Yamato
Space Battleship Yamato is an incredibly influential anime series. It remains a wildly popular space opera, which explains this new iteration. Leiji Matsumoto, Yoshinobu Nishizaki, and Eiichi Yamamoto were at the helm of this undertaking. Their work, creating thought-provoking and complex storylines, led to the creation of other legendary anime series. We have Yamato to thank for influencing Macross, Gundam, and even Evangelion. Experience this series, even if only for a few episodes, to witness what inspired other greats in the industry.
Humanity’s Enemy: Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199
Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 takes place two years after Space Battleship Yamato 2205: The New Voyage Part II: Stasha in the year AD 2207 Destruction has befallen Gamilas and Iscandar, leaving humanity to pick up the pieces. Without warning, a mysterious massive object, the “Grand Reverse,” appeared in the solar system. Despite Earth’s most aggressive resistance, the Grand Reverse touches down, begins its invasion, and conquers the capital. Silent and efficient soldiers, using multi-legged armored tanks, sweep aside the military. Authorities order the former Yamato crew to return to the stars aboard the ship faced with such destruction.
Further plot details are somewhat unclear. The project’s tagline is: “Change the future. The enemy is … the space battleship Yamato.” Given the title reading 3199, time travel elements might take place. Supervising director Harutoshi Fukui has insisted that the story will not “immediately warp” to 3199. Enemy officer Alfon captures Yuki, and Susumu finds himself racked with a sense of guilt. Separation and distance will challenge their love.

If the Yamato needs a good crew member in a pinch, J-List has a glowing recommendation. The Vulcan Science Officer 1/7 Star Trek Bishoujo Figure — Mr. Spock, a cute new figure from Kotobukiya, is available for purchase now.
