Not satisfied with being one of the best-selling manga of all time, Attack on Titan is now an official world record holder!
AnimeAnime.jp reported on Monday, May 24th, that thanks to the special giant-sized manga that was released on May 6th in Japan, the manga series is now the official record holder for “Largest Comic Book Published,” beating out the previous record-holder, a comic from Brazil titled Turma da Mônica, in both size and overall sales. The official date they certified the record on was April 13th, 2021.
As you can see from the images, creating these giant-sized manga was no small feat, as each copy of the manga measures an astounding 101 cm tall, 71.5 cm long, and weighs almost 25 pounds! Only 100 copies were printed and each one sold for ¥150,000 (roughly $1,380). If you’re wondering why you didn’t get a chance to buy this special record-breaking edition, it’s because it was only sold in Japan.
When asked about the record-breaking manga edition, the editor in charge of the manga, Shintaro Kawakubo, commented saying “When I received the proposal from the advertising department, I replied, ‘Well, I’m sure that the fans of the series will be able to handle it.’ But when I heard the actual price and number of copies, I was nervous inside. As you all know, the book was sold out in less than two minutes, and the Guinness Book of Records was achieved.”
The fact that this special edition sold out so quickly doesn’t surprise me in the least. Attack on Titan has been a runaway hit for the last eleven years and was described as a “Once in a decade hit” by Mainichi Shimbun. Publisher Kodansha credits the series for their first revenue increase in eighteen years.
With the manga wrapping up its serialization a little under two months ago and the anime wrapping up in the near future, it’ll be interesting to see what the author decides to do next. If it were me, I think I’d spend a bit of time enjoying the fruits of my labor.
