THIS is the content that I live for writing about on a daily basis!
A few days ago, the entertainment website Geeks are Sexy posted a short video that had been uploaded in 2015 but had only gathered a handful of views. The title of the video says it all, “1978 Japanese Star Wars Tuna Commercial” and it. Is. Glorious! Believe me when I say that this is absolutely worth 30 seconds of your life.
Obviously unauthorized, the commercial never openly uses the words “Star Wars” or any of the character names, but you can tell pretty clearly that was what they were going for. The name of the company whose products are being advertised is actually the famous brand Hagoromo, which was originally formed in 1931. They even still exist to this day with a wide range of products available to the public that don’t all relate to tuna (or “sea chicken”).
Japan is certainly no stranger to Star Wars, as I’m sure many of us have seen the video of Darth Vader hitting a home run at a Japanese professional baseball park. This is one of the better appearances by the icon of darkness that is Lord Vader though.
What are your favorite appearances by Star Wars characters in Japan? Share them in the comments and let’s see how many we can collect in one place!
