Give an Imp a Chance is the story of a desperate office worker named John Johnson. What is John desperate for? Depravity, of course.
John’s life is awful. He has an unfulfilling, boring job. A boss he hates. John only has one friend, a colleague named Stacy who he ends up taking care of in her drunkenness more often than not. So when a magic tome appears that will give him the chance to fulfill his fantasies and give his life some excitement, he leaps at the opportunity and works hard to summon the best demon a lonely single man could hope for — a succubus.
All does not go as planned. It’s unclear if John is working with a flawed magical book, or if he’s just incompetent, but either way, John ends up summoning the lowest of lowly demons instead of his precious succubus dream. An imp. Sophie, to be specific. A sexy blond thing happy to have had the opportunity to go to Earth, and more than a little excited to try some human dick.
So of course John tries to send her back. This thirsty man decides that Sophie’s lack of curves makes her less than perfect to meet his perverted desires, but with a little quick thinking, Sophie manages to convince him that he should in fact Give an Imp a Chance.
Story
Give an Imp a Chance is about the mutual celebration of sexuality between John and Sophie. With a few key decisions, John can become involved with Sophie’s sister Aamon as well. It turns out sex with humans is magical food, and that lets Sophie do magic. This plot is cute, playing on anime tropes fans will recognize, but with its own twists on the subject matter. The demon summoning in particular is unique, focused on imps, and world-building their particular standing and way of living in the world to drive the plot. Succubi are ground well-covered (among other things in semen, see Funbag Fantasy for example). Imps in nukige are new, and without spoiling anything, Give an Imp a Chance uses that newness to make the entire concept of sex demons its own.
Give an Imp a Chance is a short game. John and Sophie’s relationship grows nicely despite the short amount of time, and other characters like Aamon and Stacy have their roles, but there’s no doubt that when it’s over there’s a desire for more. But like John, if you don’t try this visual novel because it’s a little lacking in cushion, you’d miss out on something quirky and fun. This visual novel has a sense of humor, but it takes itself seriously enough to feel real, and at its price not buying it is practically a crime against sex demons — assuming you’re at all into sex demons.
Design and Art
The music of Give an Imp a Chance fits well with its scenes. In particular, there’s a haunting melody that stuck with me, given the arcane, demonic story, as it really brings to mind a spooky environment. The main song, which drives sex scenes and the title screen, is upbeat and got my heart pumping.
The scene CGs are sexy and detailed, with an interesting aesthetic choice for bright pink nipples and areolae that give it an instantly recognizable look. I was mostly satisfied with the number of scenes, but the chibi art, ah man, I could have done with at least two or three more chibis. Stacy definitely should have gotten one where she was irked at John with puffy cheeks, and one of Sophie lounging on the bed could have been great.
Conclusion
Give an Imp a Chance is an indie visual novel whose end only leaves me wanting more. Luckily BuxomDev has teased a new project, and in the meantime what are you waiting for? You can make Sophie a very happy imp with a short trip to JAST USA (NSFW). Fund more chibi art for the next game!
