Five years ago, players took their first steps into the free-to-play gacha title, Genshin Impact. What, at the time, was billed as a mere copy of other open-world titles has blossomed into the industry-standard for high-quality gacha games, spawning competitors like Wuthering Waves and Tower of Fantasy. On September 28, Genshin Impact celebrates its 5th anniversary. With our character’s journey nearing its end, we’re indulging in the finest Genshin Impact cosplay!
So join us today on the J-List blog as we retrace the Traveler’s footsteps across Teyvat and beyond, celebrating the Genshin Impact 5th Anniversary with cosplay of all your favorite Genshin waifus!

Mondstadt: Where Genshin Cosplay Began
The “Land of Freedom” is where players took their first steps way back in 2020. From the mysterious dragon terrorizing the capital to uncovering the chests scattered across the map, Mondstadt offers nostalgic memories for so many players. Even now, after five years and six nations, many players still return to Mondstadt to craft or submit their daily commissions. The green fields and European-inspired culture feel significantly quieter after the more hectic late-game areas.
There are plenty of gorgeous girls from Mondstadt to choose from, and we agonized over which beauties to feature. Though she’s long since been dropped from the meta, Amber is the first character you meet in Genshin Impact, earning her place. And how can we say no to Fischl’s chuuni tendencies, or Eula’s stunning curves?

Liyue: Land of the Rock-Hard Beauties
After subduing Dvalin, the Traveler and Paimon travel to Liyue, the “Land of Contracts.” There, they become embroiled in a grand conspiracy involving the death of a god, and in the process, begin learning more about Tevyat’s archons and Celestia — the floating city permanently hanging in the sky.
As a Chinese company, Hoyoverse put great effort and care into Liyue’s Chinese-inspired culture. Each year, they celebrate the Lunar New Year with the “Lantern Rite Festival,” offering players plenty of rewards, along with minigames and new stories. Liyue’s exploration takes players from sandy beaches to towering mountains, and even down into the depths of the earth.

Inazuma: Japanese-infused Genshin Cosplay
Across the oceans to the Japanese-inspired nation of Inazuma, players were tasked with understanding the truth behind the “Land of Eternity.” In a nod to Japan’s real-life isolationist policy, Inazuma’s mighty Raiden Shogun had sealed the nation’s borders in an attempt to reach “eternity.” Meanwhile, civil war raged across the land, and the concepts of time, aging, and death became unnaturally blurred.
For our Genshin cosplay, we picked some favorite mainstays (although fans of HaneAme will need to purchase her photobook to see her take on Raiden Shogun), along with this writer’s personal main, the graceful and deadly Yelan.
We’re also featuring Kamisato Ayaka cosplay. If you love the beautiful and dignified Ayaka, go and check out the J-List Store’s Kamisato Ayaka 1/7 Figure Flawless Radiance Ver.!

Sumeru: True Wisdom in These Genshin Cosplays!
The “Land of Wisdom” is a nation of stark contrasts. One of the physically largest regions to date, Sumeru’s sweeping political intrigue took players from dense jungles to expansive deserts. Based on a cultural fusion of ancient India and Egypt, as well as the Islamic Golden Age, Sumeru introduced vital story lore amidst its memorable locations and quests.
With new traversal mechanics, players could enjoy increased verticality in the thick jungles, while also getting to grips with the newly introduced Dendro interactions. Meanwhile, the Egyptian-themed pyramids and their sprawling underground tunnels presented numerous puzzles.

Fontaine: Almost Making Us Like the French
The French-inspired “Land of Justice” introduced players to one of the most unique and enjoyable underwater mechanics in video game history. Forget Ocarina of Time‘s horrendous Water Temple; Hoyoverse achieved delightful third-person underwater exploration with bright visuals, fun puzzles, and the bold (but inspired) decision to not use a traditional “oxygen” or “breath” meter.
On land, the technical prowess of Fontaine’s engineers saw players battling cogwork monsters and uncovering hidden truths from ancient civilizations. The Traveler and Paimon even throw themselves into the legal system, with Ace Attorney-inspired court battles between the nation’s archon and fan-favorite characters like Navia (make sure you check out Navia’s birthday cosplay article).

Natlan: We’ll Go to War for our Waifus!
The most recent major nation to be introduced was Natlan, the “Land of War.” With a whole roster of new traversal mechanics surrounding the nation’s dinosaur-like critters, Natlan received a mixed response from players. Based on Pre-Columbian Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Oceania, Natlan’s individual tribes and abundant use of paint were a head-scratcher after the practicality of Fontaine.
As the penultimate nation on the Traveler’s trip around Teyvat, Natlan started dropping lore everywhere, so don’t be fooled by the at-times whimsical nature of its design! Natlan also makes for some excellent Genshin Impact cosplay, particularly for fans of Latin American culture and those who appreciate tanned beauties.

Nod-Krai and Beyond!
While Teyvat’s seventh nation, Snezhnaya, has yet to be revealed, Hoyoverse has prepared a massive year of content ahead for Genshin Impact. Starting with the release of version 6.0 on September 10, Genshin has entered into a story arc called “The Song of the Welkin Moon.” Introduced to Nod-Krai, a Baltic and Slavic-inspired region, players are set to uncover the secrets of Genshin‘s lore, including the truth behind the sky and the moon.
Cosplayers are already hard at work on new characters, with Lauma and Columbina popping up online already! We also wanted to take the opportunity to feature one of the most essential characters in the game: the Traveler, and in this case, the female version, who’s canonically named Lumine. Plus, let’s shout out the tireless work of the character we all interact with every single day: Katheryne, our faithful automaton of the Adventurer’s Guild.
