Bottoms and submissives rejoice! This January brings an anime about a boy wearing a slave collar and receiving “rewards” from his master. She rides him like a donkey as they fight “ugly demons” together! Does that sound like fun? Chained Soldier could be for you! Here’s how Hidive, the North American streaming platform, describes the premise:
“Two supernatural forces appeared simultaneously on Earth: entrances to another dimension known as Mato, and Peaches, resources that give unique abilities to women. From the Mato come Yomotsu Shuuki, dangerous monsters that leave destruction in their wake. The government’s Anti-demon Corps stands against these creatures, employing women empowered by Peaches to face the monstrous threat. Yuuki Wakura watches these forces clash from a distance, but when he unexpectedly runs afoul of a Yomotsu Shuuki, he’s rescued by Kyouka Uzen, the chief of the Seventh Unit of the Anti-demon Corp—and she sees something in him that could turn the tide of the monster incursion. Yuuki holds the unique power to make Peaches more effective, but he’ll have to become Kyouka’s willing slave to join the fight against the Yomotsu Shuuki and save the world.”

Chained Soldier Teaches a Dominatrix Submissive Love
Chained Soldier (魔都精兵のスレイブ, Mato Seihei no Slave, lit. Demon City Elite Soldier Slave) is the next ecchi anime to occupy the magic battle academy genre. The twist in its premise is that only women have supernatural powers to oppose an invading demon force from another dimension. Within a short span, society became gynocentric because the boys couldn’t fight back. Let’s ignore how mahou shoujo anime worlds work because the poor heroines must work secretly. The twist on Chained Soldier’s twist is how our lead boy character gains magical talents to fight alongside the women. I see a resemblance to Freezing, the wonderfully ecchi anime from 2011, in which girls have sci-fi powers to oppose invading monsters but need “partners” to unlock them. Kyouka can “lend” her partner to other Peach-eating girls, so Yuuki will build a harem of sexy demon fighters.
The source manga started in January 2019 and already has fourteen volumes available. Studio Seven Arcs is best known for its recent work on TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You (Tonikaku Kawaii). Director Junji Nishimura has experience with demons hurting humans in Hikari no Ou (The Fire Hunter), but I’m more familiar with Bakuon!!. Sexy girls riding beasts and hunting demons? He has the right mix of experience for Chained Soldier! According to the official site, Kyouka has to “repay” Yuuki for being her slave. It doesn’t say what that entails, but readers of the manga already know, and we can guess from a short scene in the trailer. Can Akari Kitou, Kyouka’s voice actor, pull off a tsundere dominatrix? I’m curious to hear how Nezuko (Demon Slayer) and Tsukasa (TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You) would sound, but Eve (BIRDIE WING) already played one.
Yanking Your Chain
The action scenes in Chained Soldier appear to combine CGI models and 2D animation. This does not inspire much confidence. But we’ll know how the finished product looks at Anime NYC when Hidive premieres the first two episodes on November 17. However, I have much more faith in the ecchi scenes because the production committee has already commissioned two figures for Kyouka! A preview of her color scheme showed up at a hobby festival in July. How ecchi does the manga get? It’s not shy about underwear fanservice, but we’ll need to see the anime for proof of an effective adaptation. 2022 was a good year with Futoku no Guild, Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World, and World’s End Harem, then 2023 only gave us Blu-ray bait with Ayakashi Triangle. Will 2024 see the resurgence of ecchi anime? Time will tell.
