4-koma, or 4 panel manga strips, are an interesting type of manga to read. The vast majority of 4-koma are comedic, known for their gags and/or witty remarks/jokes all made within one page of a manga. Some of my personal favorites have been in the shoujo comedy genre and they’re so far from the cliche I sometimes forget that they’re romantic at all!
Here are four recommendations to give a go this summer to leave you in stitches and to occasionally feel flustered:
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun) by Tsubaki Izumi
Sakura Chiyo confesses to her crush, Nozaki-kun, but he mistakes her as a fan! Unable to convey her feelings, what happens when he invites her to his house? The cliche shoujo manga trope is picked at and broken down a lot in this hilarious series! This manga has been by Yen Press since November 2015.
Tsurezure Children (Tsuredure Children) by Wakabayashi Toshiya
Wakabayashi Toshiya depicts various scenarios of young love of several different types of people and couples. Digital publishing began in April 2017 by Kodansha Comics and the anime adaptation is coming out this summer in July.
Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! (Tomo-chan Is a Girl!) by Yanagida Fumita
Tomo Aizawa was able to successfully confess to her crush Juunichirou Kubota. There is only one problem: he just sees her as his buddy. He thought that she was a boy until they went to middle school together because her grade school was in a different school district.
Mousou Telepathy (Delusion Telepathy) by NOBEL
Nakano-san is a high school girl who can look into people’s minds. Because of that, she finds out that the mind of the popular Toda-kun is full of wild fantasies about her!
