At the young age of twenty, Nishio Ishin won the literary Mephisto Award in 2002 with his very first published novel. The Blue Savant and the Nonsense User would be the first book in his Zaregoto series that would gain him high critical acclaim and popularity with light novel fans in Japan. It was a 9-part mystery novel series following an unnamed narrator and the string of phenomenons following him — from unknown medical epidemics to mad murders. Like the many books that came to follow, Ishin’s work played on otaku culture, poking fun at common tropes such as characters having strange names, and making several references to series such as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure or Hellsing.
Since then, Ishin has published serval other series include Monogatari, which is still ongoing today after over 25 volumes. The series follows a third-year high school student who escapes a vampire attack. Afterward, he finds himself wrapped in the affairs of several girls and their business with the paranormal. Katanagatari is a 12-part novel series that was published on a monthly schedule. Following the story of a swordsman, Yasuri Shichika and his friend Togame embark on an adventure to collect the twelve Deviant Blades of legend for their shogunate.
After you’ve read the books kick back and enjoy the tv series! Nearly everything NisiOisiN has written has been adapted into an anime within the last ten years.
Today, Ishin works at Kodansha Publishing on two of their literary magazines. The first being Faust, an irregularly published magazine for younger writers whose style derives from light novels. The second is Pandora, having beeing published monthly since 2008.
Beyond his original work, Ishin is also the author of Death Note Another Note: The Los Angelos BB Murder Case, and xxxHOLic: AnotherHOLiC. Funny enough, Ishin also worked as a screenplay writer for the latter’s TV series for a single episode.
