We are just a few months away until the official premiere of the Hollywood live-action film Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. Both Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. posted a new trailer video on their official social media accounts on Tuesday.
The film will star Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) voicing Pikachu, Justice Smith (The Get Down) as Tim Goodman, Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) as Lucy, and Ken Watanabe (Godzilla, Legendary Pictures) as the film-original character Detective Yoshida. Other cast members include Chris Geere (You’re the Worst), Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Omar Chaparro (Stuck), and Rita Ora (Fifty Shades Freed).
The film is scheduled to premiere in the United States on May 10 and in Japan in the same month. Warner Bros and TOHO will be distributing the film for North America and Japan respectively. Detective Pikachu is based on the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name released in 2016 and in March 2018 for Europe, US, and Australia. Legendary Entertainment acquired the live-action film rights for the Pokémon franchise back in July 2016.
While the film is still slated to premiere in May, it is confirmed that it will have a sequel and is now in the works. It is confirmed that Oren Uziel, writer of 22 Jump Street is confirmed to writing the script for the upcoming film.
In a previous report released on the website We Got This Covered, it was stated that Legendary Entertainment was working on another live-action Pokemon movie project still set in the Detective Pikachu universe but the story will be based on the popular Gameboy Color games Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. It said that this movie will be more focused on the introduction of the franchise like how players were introduced to the lore of Pokemon through the Gameboy games.
They also released a poster which reveals a couple of Pokemon in the background.
As of this time, there is still no official word from either Warner Bros. or Legendary Entertainment to what the Detective Pikachu sequel is about but with the first film releasing in a few months, we are expecting that would probably start the possibility of a Pokemon cinematic universe. We can only hope that this movie adaptation of the popular franchise will be hit in the box office.
