Hazurewaku: Failure Frame Is the Ultimate Revenge Anime!

Every anime season contains more than a few isekai shows in which Japanese high school students get teleported to a fantasy world. Today, let’s look at the (takes a long breath) Hazurewaku no “Joutai Ijou Skill” de Saikyou ni Natta Ore ga Subete wo Juurin suru made, aka Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells anime. Why Is Hazurewaku a ‘Revenge Anime’?

The story starts with a bus full of high school students, several of whom are abusive to the weaker students in the class. Suddenly, everyone gets summoned to an isekai world where they learn they’ve become Heroes. Everyone will be granted various powers and be ranked level A, B, S, etc. Except for poor Touka Mimori, a self-described “background character.” He ends up with the weakest powers, making him a lowly E-rank. Because he has the weakest skills, the evil Goddess Vicius banishes the “trash hero” while all but a few of his classmates look on with disgust.

“This is the end that awaits the have-nots,” Vicius says of Touka as she sends him off to die alone in a dungeon. “Only a tragic fate awaits losers. Now, everyone, please burn the sight of this E-class trash hero onto your eyelids.”

But this wouldn’t be a revenge anime if the main character didn’t get OP powers. Touka rises in level quickly, learning to use his “weak” attacks to defeat any monster he encounters. He becomes so ridiculously strong he can kill major boss characters with a single spell. He soon teams up with an attractive elf waifu named Ashrain, who provides plenty of eye candy for fans.

Studio Pierrot, a popular studio that has been producing beloved anime works since the 1980s, heads the anime. The quality of the animation is high, except in episodes where CGI monsters take up too much screen time.

A Great Anime for Revenge Fans

Back in the 1970s, there was an influential movie called Death Wish. It featured Charles Bronson, who becomes a vigilante, exacting murderous revenge on the criminals of New York after the murder and rape of his family. This film hugely influenced Fist of the North Star writer Buronson (one guess where he got his pen name), who loved the concept of a strong hero killing evildoers for tormenting the weak and innocent. The genre involves using extreme violence to elicit an emotional reaction from viewers, who experience euphoria when the villains finally get what’s coming to them.

Failure Frame pushes fans’ same emotional buttons. There’s a scene in which we meet some side characters who express their intent to murder Ashrain, but not before they enjoy the pleasure of her flesh first. A few minutes later, our hero Touka appears and uses his powers to paralyze and poison these evil men. As the series progresses, he’ll be meeting up with his abusive former classmates, who did nothing to help him when he was banished.

But his main goal is to get revenge on the Goddess Vicius, who’s responsible for summoning him to this world and then banishing him again because of his supposedly weak powers. She’s so evil she forces her minions to lick her feet!

(Honestly, the Goddess Vicious is one of the show’s high points. Her voice actress, Ami Koshimizu (who voices Holo), chews up every scene she’s in.)

Hazurewaku Is Great for Elf Lovers, Too!

I’m positive we’ll all look back on 2024 as the Great Reiwa Anime Elf Bubble. Just look at all the amazing anime elves we’ve got! First, we’ve got the cute “thicc” girls of Plus-Sized Elf. We’ve got the cute elf priestess from Isekai Shikkaku and a delicious dark elf assistant from Ossan Newbie Adventurer. We also had lots of elf brides in earlier seasons this year.

Who Should Watch Hazurewaku?

If you like the isekai genre and aren’t too judgemental about stories built with familiar tropes, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the show. If you enjoy seeing villains get their comeuppance, you’ll also have a great time.

Considering how milquetoast other forms of media have become, it’s somewhat satisfying to see a hero (or anti-hero) who doesn’t flinch from a little righteous violence. This is one reason anime’s popularity keeps growing yearly: it gives fans what we want to see, whether that’s a pantyshot or a hated villain dying painfully on-screen.
