Onimusha (Oni Warrior) is a long-running video game series by Capcom. Brave warriors straight from Japan’s storied history and mythology rise to face terrifying demons. Studio Sublimation and Netflix have the task of translating these beloved games to anime. The series premiered on November 2nd, 2023, so fans can see how well they did. There’s also a trailer that could give an indication of how well this adaptation will do.

Yoshiki Okamoto and Capcom first released the video game Onimusha on January 25th, 2001. Numerous games were released since then, with the last being a remaster that was released on December 20th, 2018.

Our new lead Onimusha and a couple of interesting characters are as follows:

  • Musashi Miyamoto — Akio Otsuka (Shunsui Kyoraku in Bleach). A legendary samurai tasked with fighting the Genma using the Oni Gauntlet. He first appeared as a guest character in Onimusha: Blade Warriors. Musashi’s first canon appearance was in the manga series Onimusha: Night of Genesis.
  • Kojiro Sasaki — Toshihiko Seki (Muzan Kibutsuji in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). Another legendary samurai, and a rival to Musashi. He first appeared as a guest character in Onimusha: Blade Warriors.
  • Sayo — Aya Yamane (Secelia Dote in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury). The sole survivor of a village massacre. She follows Musashi to seek revenge.

Fans can follow the official Onimusha Twitter page for more information about the series. They previously shared their excitement for this anime adaptation. The last episode offers a tribute to Kim Jung Gi, a famous artist who drew the character designs for this series.

Become the Demon That Hunts the Demons

This new Onimusha series isn’t an attempt to adapt the video game series. Indeed, we’ve skipped over Samanosuke Akechi and went to an original Onimusha version of Musashi Miyamoto. The series is set during the Edo Period, a time of relative peace compared to the Sengoku Period, in which the video games are normally set. Despite peace sweeping through the land, dark forces continue to thrive. The legendary samurai who found a way to properly utilize two blades in combat is given the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical item that draws on the souls of those very same unearthly beings. With each life he takes, Musashi is pulled towards that very darkness he fights. He must maintain his humanity if he is to save anyone.

Have you been looking forward to the Onimusha anime series? If you’ve already seen it, does it live up to your expectations? Do you hope that a second season is possible? Let us know in the comments below.

The Taimanin RPG x Super Sonico” Sonico CAworks Figure -Taimanin ni Narimaus!-, a crossover figure from Super Sonico and Taimanin Asagi, is now available for purchase.
