I Forgot to Watch ‘The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses’

Will Fans Forget This Anime Like She Forgets her Glasses?

As I’ve written before, we’re living in a golden age of romance anime, with each season featuring several comfy offerings for fans who want to watch two people fall in love each week. One of the standouts in the current season is Suki na Ko wa Megane wo Wasureta or The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses. How does the show compare to the legendary romance anime series that came before? Let’s find out!

J-List is happy to announce lower DHL shipping rates. What awesome products can J-List send you today? Start browsing our newest products here!

What’s The Story of The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses?

Komura-kun is a junior high school boy who’s in love with the girl who sits next to him. Her name is Mie-san, and she wears glasses. But one day, Mie-san forgot her glasses, causing her to squint her eyes as if she were angry, although she just can’t see.

As each day progresses, there’s some reason why Mie-san is once again without her glasses. She broke them and is waiting for a new pair to be made. She “forgot” them again, but they’re actually on her head. She’s trying out contact lenses, but can’t put them into her eyes. She caught a cold so she’s wearing a face mask, which causes her glasses to fog up, so she takes them off. Because she can’t see, she needs to get ridiculously close to Komura-kun, resulting in funny romantic situations between the two characters.

That’s it. That’s the joke. Each set-up involves some reason why Mie-san can’t see again today, which gives Komuro a chance to get closer to her somehow.

Visually, the anime is outstanding, especially episode 1. Studio GoHands really pulled out all the stops, showing surreal camera angles as we meet the characters. If nothing else, you should watch the first episode to see how pretty it all is.

The Mechanics of Moe Anime

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses is an interesting study of the concept of moe, written 萌え in kanji. A word that literally means “sprout,” the term grew out of early 1990s Internet culture and describes the characteristics that cause fans to feel love for 2D characters.

The key to creating a good moe character is that they must have some endearing fault that makes them charming to fans, who then feel protective of the character. Some of these character faults might include:

  • Being clumsy, like accidentally leaving a brand new cell phone in your pocket and putting it in the washing machine.
  • Extreme shyness or social awkwardness.
  • Having chuunibyou, causing her to believe she’s a space alien.
  • Bad eyesight or similar impairment.
  • Generally being a boke (airhead).
  • For tsundere characters, using an angry personality as a coping mechanism to manage social situations.

Mie-san is voiced by relatively new seiyu Shion Wakayama, who has also voiced Takina from Lycoris Recoil and Yume from SSSS.Dynazenon. She’s perfect for the role.

But is The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses a Good Anime?

Once again I’m watching characters half one-third my age experiencing love, and it’s certainly an enjoyable experience if you like low-stakes slice-of-life stories like this. But is it as good as some of the recent offerings? I have to say…maybe not?

Considering the high-quality stories we’ve recently enjoyed with the finales of Kaguya-sama and Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san, plus The Dangers in my Heart, Loving Yamada at Lv. 999, and Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, I’d say the competition for this series is extremely high. At the very least, I don’t feel like I’m rooting for Komuro and Mie’s love to take off the way I have with some of these other shows. Unless the animators can get extremely clever with the “she forgot her glasses again” gimmick, I’m not hopeful this show will be remembered past the current anime season.
