The new season of Malevolent Spirits Monogatari, known simply as Monogatari in Japan, is upon us. While it’s not set to air until July 2023, we have a trailer with plenty to watch and enjoy until the season airs and we can see shining weapons tear through evil spirits.
The theme song featured in the trailer is Azusa Tadokoro’s fourteenth digital single song Private Room.
Bandai Namco Pictures has maintained the promotional home page, and the official Twitter page, since Season 1. Fans and potential viewers may visit these sites to see behind the scenes information, and view the key visual they have posted.
Gentle Spirits, Vicious Spirits
In the world presented in Malevolent Spirits Monogatari, spirits are ever-present, and more often than not, that’s not a problem. The spirits are referred to as “tsukumogami,” and they’re mostly harmless. They possess objects, as seen in real-life Japanese folklore, and the Saenome tasked with sealing them simply have a conversation with them before doing their job to save the lives of innocent people.
One of the main characters of the series is Hyoma Kunato (voiced by Takeo Otsuka), the heir to the prestigious Saenome clan that is based in Tokyo. Hyoma’s siblings were murdered by an evil tsukumogami, and he has sworn to destroy every last one that he sees while seeking the one who took his siblings from him.
His attitude and method of dealing with tsukumogami are seen as unbecoming of the heir to the Kunato family, so his grandfather Zohei Kunato (voiced by Hiroshi Yanaka) offered him a choice: to live with the Nagatsuki, or be excommunicated from the clan. Hyoma chose the former option, and started his life anew with Botan Nagatsuki (voiced by Yūki Takada), and her family, who live with benevolent tsukumogami. Botan is herself possessed by a marebito, a special otherworldly spirit, which has made her the target of many different forces.
