In today’s post let’s look at the outstanding Yuru Camp movie that came out this year, which I consider to be one of the most perfect follow-up anime films to come out in years. Keep reading if you’re a fan of cute girls doing cute camping things!
The Yuru Camp Movie is a Gift to Fans
Recently I realized I hadn’t watched the Yuru Camp movie that came out in the summer. It was on one of the streaming services here in Japan, so I watched it. I was immediately pulled back into the wonderful world of camping in central Japan. The film was so relaxing, I could feel my blood pressure going down as I watched.
First, a surprise: our girls went and got themselves all grown up! Yes, the movie takes place several years in the future, and the Yuru Camp girls have all graduated from high school and are working various jobs. Rin works as a writer for a travel magazine, Nadeshiko works in an outdoor gear shop, Inuko is a teacher, and Chiaki…well, she’s got the bizarre idea of taking an old unused plot of land in Yamanashi Prefecture and redeveloping it into a campsite.
One by one, everyone gets on board with the new project. Realizing they’ve missed their old lives camping together, everyone agrees to help make the new campground project a success. They get permission from the city to redevelop the site and start putting in the hard work required to restore the unused wild space into a proper campground.
Trouble strikes when a routine check of some pottery found during digging turns out to be from the ancient Jomo Period, 10,000 years ago. Will the project get canceled, as it’s not legal to build on an archeological site? Or can the girls find a way to save the campground project after all?
All the characters we know and love are back, including Chikuwa the chihuahua, who is an old man now, in dog terms. There are many shout-outs to the classic moments of the series, like when Rin’s motorcycle needs service, so she gets her sky-blue scooter out of storage for one last ride.
A Film About Letting Things Go
One of the saddest words to me is 廃校 haikou, meaning permanent closing and decommissioning of a school. This is an all-too-common event in Japan, a country whose population peaked in 2008 at 128 million, and has been falling ever since. There are many reasons for Japan’s famously low birth rate, but the end result is that fewer schools are needed in the future, which is kind of a sad thing.
The theme of the film is that while the usefulness of all things comes to an end, some unexpected new use might be found in the future, the way the girls give new life to the unused public space and turn it into a campground for the benefit of future generations.
The Yuru Camp Movie Isn’t the End
The Yuru Camp movie would be the perfect capstone on one of the most beloved CGDGT series ever, and no one would complain if this were the last we ever saw of Rin, Nadeshiko, Ena, Chiaki, and Inuko. The good news is that season three of Yuru Camp has been announced, meaning we get even more relaxing iyashi-kei (healing) moments with these amazing characters. That’s great!
