Japan loves to randomly designate certain days as special events. Some of these days are determined because of phonetic puns, the day February 22 has become Cat Day in Japan because 2.22 sounds like nyan nyan nyan! or a cat meowing three times to Japanese ears. Other days are set for other reasons. Today, November 2nd, is known as Tights Day in Japan, because it was the founding of the M&M Socks Company in Osaka (no relation to the candy company), one of the first makers of Western socks, stockings in Japan.
The History of Tights and Underwear in Japan
It’s interesting to examine the history of tights in Japan, and really of all Western clothing, which is known as 洋服 yohfuku in Japanese. Everything from T-shirts to business suits to blue jeans is covered under this term, with 和服 wafuku serving as the word for all traditional Japanese-style clothing. Even something we all take for granted like modern underwear, which the Japanese call pantsu taking their cues from the British as they so often do, are a relatively new addition to Japanese society, with less than a century of use.
After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, when Japan symbolically “restored” its Emperor to power and created a modern Constitutional Monarchy, Japan’s society underwent many changes, including people starting to wear Western clothes, though many women continued to wear traditional kimonos, which didn’t include proper underwear, as we’d understand it. An important point in the history of Western clothing in Japan was a fire in the Shirokiya Department Store in 1932. 14 women burned to death because they were unwilling to be rescued from the building, fearing that their kimonos might fall off, and the people gathered below could look up and see their “lady bits.” As a result of the disaster, more modern clothing was adopted for women working in various jobs in Tokyo, including Western-style undergarments.
