What Are the Best Anime about Robots and A.I.?

Peter Payne by Peter Payne

I’ve always been a fan of anime about robots and A.I. interacting with humans. One show I’ve been following closely is Vivy: Flourite Eye’s Song, an exciting story about a fully autonomous singing A.I. named Vivy who has a “mission” to learn what it means to “sing from her heart.” She meets a floating cube A.I. from 100 years in the future who reveals to her that in his time, androids have risen up and killed the human race, and he’s traveled back in time to prevent this tragedy. Together they form the Singularity Project, a pact to stop the events that cause A.I. to make war on humanity.

Why Vivy: Flourite Eye’s Song is the Anime You Should be Watching

This has been a really outstanding show for a lot of reasons, including great characters, music, and a dark time-travel story. And you know I love a good time-travel story.

Vivy Best Anime About Robots

It’s got a unique structure centered around story arcs. In order to prevent future war, Vivy and the cube A.I. Matsumoto must wait for certain historical events and then go into action to change their outcomes. These mostly are two-part episodes that are really well structured and fun to watch.

Vivy Ophelia

It’s a character-driven story. It’s great to see an anime that really focuses on building fascinating characters for us to enjoy, like Ophelia, the first A.I. in history to commit suicide, making humanity realize that androids have hearts and souls and should be given full legal rights in society. In another story arc, we meet Grace, another advanced A.I. who becomes the first A.I. to legally marry a human, which becomes another turning point in history.

One anime I’m enjoying this season is #Vivy #VivyFluoriteEyesSong, which has it all: huge drama spanning 100 years, great characters, and some of the best fighting action I can remember seeing in anime. pic.twitter.com/HI0LMGMSBv

Great action. I haven’t noticed this level of intense fighting action in a long time. The animators at WIT Studio (who formerly worked on Attack on Titan and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) are really hitting it out of the park.

Why is Anime about Robots and A.I. so Awesome?

Ever since the first true anime — Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy — it seems the medium has been especially good at telling stories about robots who pine to become human, or which otherwise deal with humans and A.I. Here are four anime about robots and A.I. that are really outstanding!

Plastic Memories Anime About Robots

Plastic Memories

In the future, humans are able to create an advanced A.I. called giftia, which can live and work alongside us and fulfill certain emotional needs, like replacing a child who died. There’s just one problem: all giftia have a built-in life span of nine years and four months. It’s too bad she won’t live…but then again, who does?

Time Of Eve Anime

Time of Eve

In the future, humans have created advanced A.I. to serve them, but there are many social barriers that keep humans and robots from feeling at ease around each other. That’s where Time of Eve comes in. It’s a coffee shop with just one rule: the humans and androids that gather there agree to acknowledge no differences between the two groups. It’s a very philosophical exploration of how humans and A.I. can co-exist, and it’s the best anime about robots you could watch.

Chobits Artificial Intelligence Anime

Chobits

The popular anime by CLAMP explored a future in which personal computers have become beautiful android girls who interact with us even while fulfilling the roles of PCs today. Oh, they also fall in love with us. Among other things, this anime is responsible for the word pantsu entering the English language.

Robot Carnival

Robot Carnival

Hot on the success of Akira came to this compilation film about humans and robots, with some of the most famous directors of the era contributing a story on the subject, including Katsuhiro Otomo. This was back in the days when most people were only just becoming aware of anime, and it blew many minds.

Thanks for reading this post on anime about robots and A.I. Do you have a favorite anime that explores these topics? Post it below, or share her with us on Twitter!
