One thing that drew me to animation early on was that anything that can be imagined can be animated easily so that any kind of story can be told. This includes stories of fantastic aliens from far-off planets, and anime has always had lots of interesting alien creatures. I asked J-List’s customers who the best aliens in anime were, and here’s the ranking we came up with!
The Ten Best Aliens in Anime
Ryouko Hakubi
Tenchi Muyo! was a big gateway anime for a lot of fans, and thus, the first anime alien character many fans would have been exposed to is Ryouko Hakubi!
Eris
While Asobi ni Iku Yo! is the Japanese title for the series, I absolutely adore the English title Planet Cat Cuties a lot more. It’s the story of a lucky main character who encounters a sexy catgirl alien who’s come to learn about Earthlings.
Milia Fallyna Jenius
My favorite anime series of all time is Macross. The story of Earth being invaded by an interstellar race of warrior giants. In a story twist that delighted my younger self, the fighting is stopped when Max defeats Milia, the star Zentraedi warrior, and they fall in love and get married, bringing the two races together.
Starsha of Iscandar
When I was 9 years old, I started watching Star Blazers, and things have never been the same since. When Earth is being ravaged by radiation bombs by the evil Gamilas, Starsha of Iscandar offers humanity a way to survive… as long as the Yamato can travel the 148,000 light-years and back within one year. The Space Battleship Yamato 2199 reboot is among one of the most perfect anime realizations ever.
Runner up: Theresa of Telezart, who warns humanity about the impending invasion of the Comet Empire, in the second season of Yamato. Read my blog post about Yamato 2202 here.
Lala Satalin Deviluke
An alien from the planet Deviluke who comes to Earth to provide sexy fanservice for us. How can we not love her?
Yuki Nagato
An android who represents the wishes of the Galactic Data Overmind, Yuki is probably the most powerful alien on this list. While we love all versions of Yuki, the “quiet girl in the literature club” from The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya film is my favorite.
(This sign is a real sign that you pass if you drive to Area 51, which I did with my son once.)
Ichika Takatsuki
An alien who’s come to Earth to find her dreamland, and search for a certain place she’s got a connection to. The anime is a spiritual sequel to Onegai Teacher and Onegai Twins, made by the same creators but at a different studio, which why they’re not allowed to make “this is priority one!” jokes.
Kazami Mizuho
Everyone’s favorite alien teacher from Onegai Teacher, Kazami came to earth to eat Pocky and marry a Japanese high school boy named Kei…and she’s all out of Pocky.
See my post on my recent visit to the Please Teacher Holy Land, Lake Kizaki in Nagano Prefecture.
Lum Invader
The explosive popularity of Urusei Yatsura is pretty much responsible for all of us being anime fans today, and it all started when Ataru was able to steal Lum’s top, exposing her breasts and allowing him to touch Lum’s horns. How could she not be at the top of this list?
Bonus alien! Incubators from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. While we hate them for condemning magical girls to lives of torture and death, they are doing their part to stave off the entropy that will bring the death of the universe. That’s a good thing, right?
That’s our list of the best aliens in anime. Got any more favorites? Post them below, or tell us on Twitter!
